  • How to Remove Misspelled Words from Your Android Dictionary

SndVolPlus Mutes the System Volume with a Single ClickWindows 7 only: System volume mixer replacement SndVolPlus does everything the default system mixer does, with one addition: middle-clicking the system tray icon mutes the volume.

Once you've downloaded the application and added it to your startup folder, you'll need to disable the default mixer icon through the Taskbar Properties -> Notification Icons -> System Icons screen. The new mixer icon will work the same way as the old one, except you can now middle-click the icon to mute the system volume instantly.

SndVolPlus is a free download for Windows 7 only. If you prefer the regular mixer icon or you're using a previous version of Windows, you can always create a shortcut or hotkey to mute the system volume instead.

  • Google Maps Adds Auto-Suggestions From Popular Searches, Local Businesses

Google Maps Adds Auto-Suggestions From Popular Searches, Local BusinessesCan't remember the name of that Brazilian steak place with "Fogo" in the name? Google Maps can now offer up the answer, as it adds popular searches, local business results, and hints from your previous searches to its search box.

No word yet from the official Google LatLong (a.k.a. Maps) blog, but Google Operating System points out the new additions to Google Maps, which used to offer up only your previous searches as you typed. The ranking order does seem somewhat random, but Google's plan is always to iterate improvements.

Google Maps was very busy yesterday and overnight, also adding Voice Search for Maps for Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, along with a Buzz layer for desktop Maps users, so you can see what's being said about a location or business on Buzz.

  • DéjàClick Lets You Record and Automate Browsing Activities

DéjàClick Lets You Record and Automate Browsing ActivitiesDéjàClick Lets You Record and Automate Browsing ActivitiesFirefox: If you've ever been annoyed by having to do repetitive actions on a web site with no way to automate them, DéjàClick can help. Record and play back browser-based actions with DéjàClick and skip tedious future clicks.

DéjàClick is a Firefox extension offered by AlertSite, a company that specializes in software designed to monitor web sites and alert the site owners if specified processes are not occurring properly—essentially using automated script "robots" to go test out things like the search function and the checkout process. DéjàClick is their free offering for non-commercial use to allow users to record their own browsing and play it back to automate processes later on.

Any time there is an instance where you have to actually interact with the browser—as opposed to using a bookmark to jump somewhere in a site or a login tool—you can use DéjàClick to record yourself performing the actions and store that recording as a script. Every time you visit that site or interface again you can execute that script and save yourself the hassle. Check out the company site here or visit the link below to grab the extension.

  • Force Firefox Autofill to Behave By Removing “WWW” Bookmarks

In Firefox Tip, Autocomplete, Firefox, Firefox 3, Address Bar, Url, Urls, Gizmodo, / 15 May 2009 / 0 comments

Lifehacker reader Jordan loves the easy browsing that enabling auto-completion in Firefox provides, but found it just didn't work for some sites. The fix? Removing bookmarks with "www" stuck at the front.

So while he'd normally be able to type "li" and automatically get a Lifehacker URL, Facebook and the New York Times just didn't seem to come up. He discovered that typing straight-up facebook.com or nytimes.com re-directed to www.facebook.com and www.nytimes.com, which Facebook's autofill feature wanted him to type in a few w keys for.

One solution would be to edit your bookmarks rigorously; another would be to switch to using a personal favorite extension, Enter Selects. But Jordan's solution is a bit more straight-forward:

The first step was to delete these (www) bookmarks - they were overriding my history.

Then, the next time I typed in ny, I hit down until I found www.nytimes.com. Then I hit shift-delete to delete this URL from my autocomplete.

Finally, I had to type ny again and arrow down to nytimes.com. I hit enter, and now whenever I type ‘ny' and hit enter I go to http://nytimes.com. Finally!

It's a tiny tweak, but one that really makes a difference for the pages you're trying to get to all the time.
