  • Turn Any Messenger Bag or Briefcase into a Backpack in an Instant

In Macgyver Tips, Diy, Go Bag, Bags, Backpacks, How To, Clever Uses, Macgyver Tip, / 17 April 2012 / 0 comments

Turn Any Messenger Bag or Briefcase into a Backpack in an InstantMessenger bags and briefcases have the advantage of being at your side and easily accessible, plus you can sit down on a chair while wearing them. Still, many of us (myself included) prefer the good old backpack for comfort, aesthetics, and several other reason. If you'd rather not choose, however, Reddit user turnTheLead demonstrates how you can just take pretty much any messenger bag or briefcase and turn it into a backpack in just a few seconds.

You can get a pretty good visual representation of how it works from the photo above, but turnTheLead explains it step by step:

    1. Lengthen the shoulder strap all the way.
    2. Pass the shoulder strap through the handles
    3. Open it up so you have two holes for your arms to go through.
    4. Put it on and be hands-free, ready to fight or eat a hot dog.

Pretty cool. For more pictures, check out the full post over at Reddit.

  • The UNDFIND One Bag Transforms Into Whatever Kind of Messenger Bag You Need

In Stuff We Like, Bags, Go Bag, Laptops, Photography, Cameras, Video, Clips, / 03 February 2012 / 0 comments

The UNDFIND One Bag Transforms Into Whatever Kind of Messenger Bag You Need The UNDFND One Bag looks like a designer messenger bag, but is far more dynamic and modular than you'd expect. The majority of the bag is modifiable, allowing you to transform it into the bag you need right now, rather than switching your gear in and out of a variety of different containers.

The One Bag is made of water-resistant neoprene and features several modifiable parts. Most notable is the front cover. It contains its own storage compartment and is completely removable, so you can store different items in different covers and simply swap them out when you need to change your bag's inventory. By default, the One Bag operates as a standard laptop bag, but with an insert you can turn it into a three-lens camera bag. There is also a waist shooter bag that you can use to carry additional lenses. It'll clip on to your belt, or you can use a strap to sling it over your shoulder. This back features exchangeable front covers as well. The covers come in multiple styles, so you don't have to switch them out for utilitarian purposes. If you get bored with one look, you can simply change to another.

However you decide to assemble it, the One Bag is very comfortable to wear. The padded strap makes the weight feel more gentle on your shoulder balances the bag well on your hip. Exchanging covers and inserts is very simply. It's handled by velcro, which seems like it wouldn't be terribly sturdy, but it because the seal is made on both sides and tucked into the bag it holds just as well as if it were sewn in. The only thing I found to be problematic is that the bottom of the photography insert has no bottom. This was intentional, in order to keep the insert's spacial requirements to a minimum, but I think that even a thin layer of fabric at the bottom would be nice just to make it easier to remove all the contents in one simple lift. That aside, the One Bag is very versatile, stylish, and comfortable. If it doesn't suit your needs one day, you can simply change it so it does.

  • Repurpose an Empty Wet Wipes Container as a Plastic Bag Holder

In Clever Uses, Household, Reuse, Cleaning, Bags, Wipes, Containers, Storage, / 22 December 2011 / 0 comments

Repurpose an Empty Wet Wipes Container as a Plastic Bag Holder A can of wet wipes can be a real convenience, especially if your countertops or desk surface tends to get dirty easily. When those wipes are all gone however, don't just toss the container in the recycling bin—give it a new lease on life by using it to store plastic food storage or grocery bags. Just roll them up tightly and pull one through the top so it's ready when you open the lid.

Of course, a rolled up mass of freezer bags or plastic grocery bags aren't perforated like the wet wipes the container came with, so they won't smoothly come out of the top one after the other—you'll have to pull the next one up so it's ready after you remove the bag you need. Still, the top of the wet wipes container is perfect for pulling out one thin item at a time, and the container itself is big enough to hold several bags. It's a far sight better than a box of plastic bags in your cabinets, or a wadded up mass of plastic bags under the sink.

The folks at Savvy Housekeeping have a number of other ways to store plastic grocery bags so they're available when you need them (I'm a fan of this old IKEA bag holder that fits under the sink and is only a few bucks), but this is a great option if you have tons of bags and no good place to keep them.

  • Add a Homemade Security Alarm to Your Bag with Headphone Cables

In Diy, Alarms, Diy Creations, Security, Privacy, Safety, Bags, Travel, / 28 October 2011 / 0 comments

Add a Homemade Security Alarm to Your Bag with Headphone CablesWhether it's paranoia or past experience, protecting your bag from potential thieves isn't a bad idea. It's also a fun DIY project! The folks over at MAKE figured out how to create a simple alarm out of headphone cables and a few other inexpensive items. Here's how it works:

This project uses simple electronics to create an alarm circuit for a shoulder bag. The key components are two 1/8" headphone jacks with "normally closed" switches, which detect whether a plug is in the jack. Wiring two of these jacks in series with an alarm creates a circuit that activates when both plugs are removed. With this arrangement, you can use one jack to keep the alarm from sounding while you arm the system. The other jack accepts a plug that you can tether to a belt loop or other anchor. When the bag is pulled away from its anchor plug, the alarm sounds. You can of course use this same circuit for a handbag, backpack, or any other personal cargo carrier.

To put this project together you'll need male and female headphone cables, a "AA" battery holder for eight batteries, eight AA batteries, battery snap connectors, a little plywood and clear plastic, heat-shrink tubing, and jewelry wrapping wire. You'll also need a bag to add this DIY alarm to, of course. This project is a little in-depth but seems pretty straightforward. Looks like a good one for the weekend so you can put it to good use when you're headed back to work on Monday.
