  • Restore a Discarded Bicycle

In Weekend Project, Bicycles, Bikes, Restoration, Reuse, Repair, / 28 January 2012 / 0 comments

Restore a Discarded BicycleIf you want to try bicycling on the cheap and support keeping waste out of landfills, consider restoring a discarded bicycle as your next project. While the time and money investment will vary depending on the condition of the bike, you still should save a decent chunk of money and will have learned essential repair skills.

Instructables user schkip1973 provides a knowledge base for learning to restore dumpster bikes by recommending specific bicycle repair books, tools, and materials to have on hand, taking you through stripping down the bike into parts, restoring the frame, and reassembling the bike.

Of course your found bicycle's may also have problems with the wheels, brakes, gears, etc. While this particular instructable does not go into those details you should have no trouble finding similar tutorials online or in the recommended bicycle repair manuals.

There are lots of salvageable bicycles in most every town or city. If you need a ride or you're looking for a new hobby why not give bicycle restoration a try?

  • Make Your Own Brake Switch on a Bicycle to Warn Drivers You’re Slowing Down

In Diy, Bicycles, Safety, Cycling, Reuse, Repair, / 12 January 2012 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Brake Switch on a Bicycle to Warn Drivers You're Slowing DownBicycles don't have a lot of ways to tell everyone on the road what you're doing, but Instructables user abikerider fixes part of that problem with a DIY brake lever light switch that informs drivers you're slowing down.

The nice thing about abikerider's method is that it wires through your existing brake lever in a clean way. It's not mounted on the handlebars or added awkwardly to the frame. Instead, you install a small push button onto the brake lever itself and then line the wire leading to the brake along your brake line. This way, when you pull the brake lever, the push button is engaged and the brake lights turns on. Take a look at the Instructables for a full guide.

  • Turn a Plastic Bottle Into a Water-Resistant Smartphone Bike Mount

In Diy, Bicycles, Cycling, Clever Uses, Smartphones, Weather, Outdoors, Diy Creations, / 18 November 2011 / 0 comments

Turn a Plastic Bottle Into a Water-Resistant Smartphone Bike MountWe've shown you one or two ways to mount your smartphone to your bike, but that won't do you much good when it starts drizzling outside. This quick trick will make sure your smartphone stays safe and dry.

This works with nearly any smartphone mounting method out there: all you need to do is cut the top off a plastic bottle and cut a slit down one side to leave room for your smartphone's mount. It might not be the best if it's pouring rain outside, but it'll certainly keep it safe from the occasional shower—and you can always seal it in a plastic bag, too, if the bottle isn't cutting it. • Kuat Bottle Bike Lock Fits in Your Bicycle’s Bottle Cage

In Stuff We Like, Security, Bicycles, Annoyances, Outdoors, Weather, Outdoors, Diy Creations, / 03 November 2011 / 0 comments

Kuat Bottle Bike Lock Fits in Your Bicycle's Bottle CageBike locks are an annoying necessity of life. They keep your bike safe, but always seem to get in the way when you're riding. The Kuat Bottle Lock fits in your bike's bottle cage, coiled up and organized for when you're on the road.

Almost like a retractable extension cord, the flexible lock chain coils back up inside the "bottle" with a twist of the lid, so it never gets too tangled or unwieldy. It's far from the strongest lock on the market, but it'll get you by, plus you can beef it up with a padlock and some clever wrangling. Hit the link below to check out the $34 Bottle Lock, and be sure to check out the review over at Adventure Journal for tips on how to use it to its fullest potential.
