  • "If You Don’t Know It’s Impossible, It’s Easier to Do"

In Quotables, Creativity, Motivation, Work, Freelancing, Career, Advice, Art, Life Tips, / 22 May 2012 / 0 comments

"If You Don't Know It's Impossible, It's Easier to Do" You have no idea what you're doing. This is great, says author Neil Gaiman in a commencement speech at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Being unfamiliar with established rules and limits is a plus when you're trying to be creative and make things: "If you don't know it's impossible, it's easier to do."

"And because nobody's ever done it before, they haven't made up rules to stop anyone from doing that particular thing again."

Scrub to about the 1:50-mark for this nugget of advice, part of his 20-minute speech on all the things he wish he had known when he started out as a writer.

Two others worth remembering if you're a freelancer or artist:

    • Enjoy the ride, don't fret the whole way (the most important advice Gaiman ever got but never listened to, from Stephen King)
    • You get freelance work if your work is good, you're easy to get along with, and you're on deadline. Actually, you just need two out of those three to get paid as a freelancer.

  • Think You Might Get Laid Off? Know What You Can Negotiate in Your Severance Deal

In Jobs, Career, Money, Personal Finance, Preparation, Career, Advice, Art, Life Tips, / 18 May 2012 / 0 comments

Think You Might Get Laid Off? Know What You Can Negotiate in Your Severance DealMany more people than ever before are getting the pink slip, thanks to massive layoffs happening everywhere. If there's a chance you could be the next layoff, find out what you can get from your company before you're rushed out the door.

Severance packages vary by company and will usually depend on your length of service as well as your position in the organization. Although not all severance agreements are negotiable, it doesn't hurt to try to get a better offer.

Forbes recommends the first step to take before or when you're laid off is to look into all your benefits. See if your group life and disability insurance can be converted to an individual plan.

Because your health insurance is the most important benefit but you'll be responsible for the expensive health insurance premiums to extend your coverage under COBRA, ask if the company can cover the premiums or at least the portion they had been paying when you were an employee.

Other items you may be able to negotiate include outplacement services, part of your deferred bonus for the year, and the terms of any non-compete clauses. Also, definitely don't forget to get your letters of recommendation.

Severance pay available or not, it pays to be prepared if you think you might lose your job.

  • Nail the "Tell Me About Yourself" Job Interview Question

In Interview, Job Search, Job, Career, Preparation, Career, Advice, Art, Life Tips, / 17 May 2012 / 0 comments

Nail the "Tell Me About Yourself" Job Interview QuestionThe "tell me about yourself" job interview question isn't just a warm up question, but, as with the other questions, a chance to sell yourself as the perfect candidate for the job. Prepare your best answer with this three-part statement approach.

The Personal Branding Blog recommends you craft your answer to include a summary of your career history (one sentence), an example of one career accomplishment (one or two sentences), and a summary of what you want next in your career that's relevant to the position at hand (one or two sentences).

    Here's the example given:

"I am a chemical engineer with eight years of experience, four which were in process engineering at Clorox working on improving plant productivity and four in specialty resin chemical sales where I help customers develop new products that improve their competitiveness in the marketplace. (Part One)

"Recently, through networking, I learned of a company that had great products except for their concrete coating line. I knew that we had a resin that would enable the company to develop a faster drying concrete coating, thereby improving the company's ability to compete more effectively in their marketplace. I called on the decision-makers, got their interest, worked with R&D and helped them develop a product line that resulted in $2 million in new sales for the company in the first year, which meant $400K in new sales for us. (Part Two)

"For the next step in my career, I would like to be with a larger firm with more resources so that I can continue to drive business and grow sales for both the company and my customers in a wider variety of applications. Once I have proven myself and earned the right to get promoted, I would like to use my skills to lead and develop a sales team." (Part Three)

Note that the answer is targeted to the job, not a personal biography—because hiring managers don't really care where you grew up. What matters most is how you'll contribute to the company.

  • "Business Opportunities Are Like Buses; There’s Always Another One Coming."

In Quotables, Quotes, Opportunities, Work, Job, Career, Business, Motivation, Life Tips, / 10 May 2012 / 0 comments

"Business Opportunities Are Like Buses; There’s Always Another One Coming."This quotation comes from business magnate Richard Branson, who has certainly seen his share of business opportunities. When we want something, we can sometimes end up with a laser-like focus on that thing. Opportunities definitely fall into that category. It's important to remember that if one thing doesn't work out, we can get started on the next. If things aren't quite working out the way you'd hoped in one instance, just get ready for the next bus to come.
