Keep an emergency $20 in your phone case

The merits of smartphone cases are a subject of debate, but if you do use one, consider storing an emergency $20 bill between the cover and the phone.

As Reddit user Lunkavitch points out, the money could come in handy to pay a cab or lunch bill if your wallet gets stolen, or if you just forgot it at home. It may seem a little paranoid, but it's a small insurance policy that could get you out of a jam if your wallet goes missing.

  • How to Use the New Smart Covers with the Original iPad

In Ipad, Diy, Protection, Case, Gadgets, Upgrades, / 22 March 2011 / 0 comments

How to Use the New Smart Covers with the Original iPad While the iPad Smart Covers may not be the best protectors of the iPad, they are pretty neat and make for an easily attachable stand. If you have an iPad 1 and want to use a new Smart Cover, here's a quick hack that'll let you do just that.

While the concept of adding a few magnets to your iPad 1 isn't revolutionary, the trick is in finding the right placement and getting the right kind. You need rare earth magnets, and the folks over at the design blog Russians Used a Pencil (the story behind that name is interesting) found that neodymium block magnets in the size of 3/8" x 3/16" x 1/32" worked the best. All you have to do is glue them on to your iPad 1 where the Smart Cover wants to attach and you're all set. If you ever change your mind, you can just chip them off pretty easily with a screwdriver.

Although I can't say I have much interest in the new Smart Covers, especially with the cost of the things, this hack definitely makes me want to. If you're really into the smart covers and want one on your iPad 1, this looks like a great way to make that him.

  • Wool Felt Cases Give Your Gadgets a Plush Life

In Stuff We Like, Case, Gadget, Gadgets, Diy, Diy Creations, / 19 January 2010 / 0 comments

Your phone, iPod, and other gadgets are cold pieces of futuristic tech, but you've got a soft spot for them. Give them, and your pockets, a different feel with Byrd & Belle's wool felt cases, which combine plush linings with modern style.

Byrd & Belle is run by an architecture employee in downtown Minneapolis who found herself sidelined by the economy. Her shop delivers gray wool felt cases for iPods, iPhones, laptops, and generic pocket-sized gadgets. There's a unified look to her designs, with brown or black leather straps for each item, though custom orders seem to be accepted. And the straps on the iPod and iPhone cases are functional, tucking your wrapped-around earbuds into place and keeping your device from sliding out of the pocket.

So many gadgets are machined in such a way as to leave the impression that no human ever had a hand in making them, and the cases are made to match—shiny, polished, round-edged things meant to either let the device's looks come through, or hide the device in a similar-minded pocket of future-shock materials. Byrd & Belle's cases are the antithesis, looking stylish, sleek, and unique, while offering a softer touch and warmer looks than the standard black accessory.

Want to try your hand at your own custom felt cases? Rosa previously showed us how to print and fold your own customizable iPhone case that can be modified for any smartphone design. Design*Sponge has a felt glasses case tutorial that can easily be adapted for other objects, and, well, the list goes on if you Google for "Felt" and "DIY case."

Byrd & Belle's cases start at a reasonable $8 and range up to $82. Given that it's an Etsy crafter just catching up after a holiday hiatus—and, well, given this post—your order may have to hold a while before shipping.

  • Make a Custom Leather Case for Your Small Electronics

In Weekend Project, Diy, Case, Ipod, Diy, Diy Creations, / 22 November 2008 / 0 comments

Sure you could probably pick up a pleather case for nearly any electronic device you own, courtesy of eBay and healthy international trade routes, but it would lack the charm of a hand crafted leather case. There is an excellent tutorial over at the DIY blog Instructables on how to make a molded leather case. The tutorial details how to make the case for an iPod, but the molding technique is valid for anything you'd like to mold a case for. The required tools are minimal and inexpensive, for their sample they bought leather scraps off eBay and made their mold out of dense chipboard and tape. For other interesting DIY case ideas, check out how to make an iPod Nano case from scratch or how to make a laptop case out of floppies.
