  • A Five-Minute Routine to Keep Your Bathroom Clean

In Cleaning, Home, Household, Chores, Time Management, / 23 May 2012 / 0 comments

A Five-Minute Routine to Keep Your Bathroom CleanCleaning the bathroom may very well be the worst of all the household chores, but Apartment Therapy has put together a quick five minute daily routine that can save you the suffering of scrubbing for hours on end.

The basic idea of Apartment Therapy's routine is to break bathroom cleaning into five 60 second chunks that you can do at any point in the day. Here's the basic breakdown:

    • Minute one: clearing off surfaces.
    • Minute two: surface cleaning.
    • Minute three: straightening.
    • Minute four: wipe down mirrors and fixtures.
    • Minute five: assess and wipe down anything else.

You can mix things up a bit to fit your needs. For instance, my bathroom is the size of a small closet so clearing off surfaces is pretty much non-existant, but I could spend that minute sweeping instead. The important part to remember is to keep it short and do it daily so you don't have to do a deep scrub down the line. Head over to Apartment Therapy for a breakdown of each minute and more cleaning suggestions.

  • If You Want to Actually Finish the Tasks on Your To-Do List, Include Why You Should Do Them

In Getting Things Done, Mind Hacks, To Do Lists, To Do, Task Management, Work, Chores, Motivation, / 22 May 2012 / 0 comments

If You Want to Actually Finish the Tasks on Your To-Do List, Include Why You Should Do ThemTo-do lists are just a nagging reminder of all the things you need to do, so actually inspiring yourself to do them isn't always easy. Michael Pantalon, Ph. D, writing for Psychology Today, suggests that you're more likely to accomplish these tasks by including why you should do them as well.

We know what we have to do, as well as, when and where we have to do it, but, for some reason, we don't think about why we want to or need to do it. That's probably because we are under the spell of the "have-to's" and forget we always have a choice.

Creating a "why do" list, as he calls it, can help you remember why you actually want to do something and avoid thinking that you have to do it. When creating your lists, just make a sublist under each item filled with all the reasons this is something you really want to do. Don't include items for the sake of including them, but instead focus on the things that make you excited about this task. It may be hard to inspire yourself to do the boring chore of laundry, but you can always find reasons. For example, you may have an exciting job interview coming up and you want to look your best, so it's important to take care of cleaning your best clothes in advance. The item wouldn't be on your list if there wasn't some kind of motivation, so tap into why a task is important to you in the first place. If you can't figure out why, it might not deserve to be on the list at all.

For more tips on actually finishing off the tasks on your list, read our guide on making your to-do list do-able.

  • Use an Old Garden Hose to Make Carrying Buckets and Crates Easier on Your Hands

In Clever Uses, Household, Garden, Chores, Garden Hose, Comfort, Chores, Motivation, / 27 April 2012 / 0 comments

Use an Old Garden Hose to Make Carrying Buckets and Crates Easier on Your Hands I like to keep milk crates and other plastic mesh storage containers around, both for stackable, space-saving storage but also because they have handles and they're easy to move. The trouble is that when they're full of stuff, the handles dig into your hands when you pick them up. If you have a spare garden hose in your basement, you can make carrying them around much more comfortable.

The trick is pretty simple—just cut the garden hose into strips that are long or wide enough to wrap around the handle. The added cushion of the plastic hose will alleviate that cutting sensation when you've been carrying a bucket full of water or a milk crate full of books. The suggestion comes to us from This Old House, which has a bunch of other great uses for an old garden hose in your house and in the garden. Before you throw yours out and pick up a new one, give the list a look. Do you have any suggestions to add? Better cushions to use when carrying heavy objects? Let us know in the comments.

  • Transport a Load of Laundry With One Hand, No Basket Required

In Time Savers, Laundry, Chores, Clothing, Clothes, Household, Clever Uses, Motivation, / 04 April 2012 / 0 comments

Transport a Load of Laundry With One Hand, No Basket RequiredSometimes, if I haven't done laundry in awhile, using my hamper to transport clothes to the laundry room isn't ideal since it'll contain a few loads. Redditor RedSquaree shows us how to move those clothes without dropping them everywhere.

Transport a Load of Laundry With One Hand, No Basket RequiredJust lay a pair of pants—preferably one that's going that particular load—and roll up the other clothes, as shown above. You can then carry it with one arm, without dropping socks and other items of clothes along the trail Hansel and Gretel style. You could use a towel or sheet too, but if your towels are in their own separate load—which they should be—this trick works pretty well. Check out the full step-by-step to the right, or hit the link below to read more, and while you're at it, check out our favorite tips for speeding up laundry too.
