  • Put Your Pants On Without Your Underwear Bunching Up

In Clothing, Household, Time Savers, Annoyances, Daily Routine, / 24 May 2012 / 0 comments

Put Your Pants On Without Your Underwear Bunching UpIt's a silly problem to lament, but it's very real: that moment when you pull up your pants, only to have your underwear bunch up around your waist. Redditor 04andrew22 shares his brilliant solution.

To keep your boxers/boxer briefs from bunching up inside your pants when you pull them up, place your boxers inside your pants before you put them on, then pull them up together. . .It also helps when wearing tighter pants.

Is it a ridiculous problem? Yes, but we've been known to address those from time to time, and this is actually pretty clever. Of course, some of you probably discovered this trick when you were 4 years old, but others of us were not so fortunate. I don't know about you, but I'm going to be doing this every day for the rest of my life...starting tomorrow.

  • Make Your Own Wardrobe-Style Boxes for Quickly Packing Clothes

In Moving, Packing, Saving Time, Clothing, Boxes, / 18 May 2012 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Wardrobe-Style Boxes for Quickly Packing ClothesWhether you're getting ready for a big move or your just stuffing away your season clothes, packing up clothes is never a fun process. To make the process a little smoother, Reddit user LutzExpertTera simply throws the clothes on a makeshift hanger attached to a box.

The picture above shows a custom piece of wood, but any old pole will do provided it fits outside the box. Throw your clothes on the makeshift hanger, turn the hanger diagonally and drop it in the box. This way you'll be able to keep the clothes on hangers and skip the expensive wardrobe boxes. If that seems like too much work, you can always try the dead body bundle technique.

  • Build Your Own Vest Lined with Hidden Pockets with Bargain Thrift Store Finds

In Diy, Project, Sewing, Pockets, Hidden Pockets, Vest, Clothing, Saving Money, Thrifty, Thrift Store, / 18 May 2012 / 0 comments

Build Your Own Vest Lined with Hidden Pockets with Bargain Thrift Store Finds A good fleece vest can keep you warm on a chilly day, but thanks to Instructables user libraryCat, it can also be the ultimate storage device, complete with internal pockets to hold all of your gear. All you need is a fleece vest that fits, and a shirt you don't mind cutting up—both of which he found at his local thrift store.

Commercial products that do the same job (and admittedly are professionally made) can get kind of pricey, so it makes sense to try the DIY approach if you have the time and energy. libraryCat took a simple silver shirt and a black fleece vest, cut the shirt to fit inside the vest, and sewed it in as a new lining. With some of the excess fabric, he crafted an array of pockets and sleeves that he could use to hold his phone, sunglasses, even a bottle of water. He walks you through the process—and tells you how he created each pocket—at the link below, so hit that up for the details. You will need some sewing skills to make this work though.

It's a handy idea—especially if you like vests but wish they had a few more pockets—like a sleeve for your phone and place to stash your earbuds while you're out for a run. Oh, and we should mention—this is for fun, not for real spying, and make sure you empty those pockets when you go to the airport, okay? What do you think? How would you improve the design? Let us know in the comments.

  • The Best Ways to De-Stink Your Stuff

In Cleaning, Household, Clever Uses, Home, Kitchen, Clothing, Air, Fresh, Thrifty, Thrift Store, / 16 May 2012 / 0 comments

The Best Ways to De-Stink Your StuffIt doesn't matter how clean you think you are, your stuff is bound to get a little stinky once and a while. That means your clothes, shoes, carpets, couches, and who knows what else. So, what's the best way to handle the stench? Let's take a look.

Different deodorizers work better for different situations, but a few catch-all odor-destroyers work better than others. Let's break it down by the general size and take it from there.

    De-Stink Your Whole House

The Best Ways to De-Stink Your StuffAfter a long winter and a wet spring opening up the windows to let air in isn't always enough to de-stink the house. The easiest, most carefree method is to stick bars of soap all around your house, but that will only freshen it up. To truly destroy a nasty scent in your home you need to break out the big guns and that means vinegar.

We've mentioned before vinegar is a good way to reduce the stink and it really does work. Fill up a bowl with vinegar, leave it in the various rooms in your house, and take off for an afternoon. When you get back, the house will be rid of that funky scent. To keep the house smelling fresh going forward, toss a few bits of charoal around the house. Photo by Wendy Harman.

De-Stink Clothes, Shoes, and Small Areas

The Best Ways to De-Stink Your StuffNow that your house is smelling fresh it's time to move onto your closets where your clothes and shoes are still adding a nefarious odor to the air. If a good wash doesn't rid your clothes of their stink it's time to turn to one of the most powerful of deodorizers: cat litter.

Cat litter exists for one single purpose: to eliminate the smell of cat poop. So unless your clothes smell worse than that you'll be able to deodorize a good chunk of your wardrobe. You can pour a little into your shoes to de-odorize them within 24 hours, clear out the musty smell in all types of clothes by storing them in a suitcase with cat litter, and leave a small amount of litter in a closet to freshen it up right away.

Of course, if you have a cat you might not want to leave a bunch of cat litter all over the house for fear you'll be creating an impromptu toilet. If that's the case, baking soda is your go-to method to de-stink small areas. For your shoes, just pour baking soda into a coffee filter and stuff the filter inside your shoes overnight. According to home improvement blog The New Homemaker baking soda can also be used as a substitute for detergent as a way to get clothes fresh. Better yet, you can sprinkle a little in your dirty laundry to get rid of the stink of your clothes hamper. For any other small area you can take the same approach as cat litter and just leave little canisters of baking soda around to freshen up small rooms. Photo by Jon Ross.

    De-Stink Furniture

The Best Ways to De-Stink Your StuffBaking soda is great for all sorts of things, but it's also perfect for upholstered furniture. Apartment Therapy recommends you sprinkle on a little baking soda and let it sit for as long as possible (24 hours is recommended). The only trick is to keep the furniture shaded during the process because otherwise the baking soda will bleach it. When the 24 hours is up, wipe down your furniture and you're good to go.

For wood furniture, your best bet is white vinegar. According to DIY home blog Brightnest cleaning wood furniture is as easy as wiping down the wood with vinegar and water. Take a sponge out, dip it in a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water, wring it out good, and then wipe down your furniture (or shelves, walls, windowsills, or any other stinky wood). Photo by Jessica Mullen.

With just a few simple ingredients your house and everything in it will be smelling great. The best part is that none of the above methods require much work and you probably already have everything you need. If it's just a light set of odors, don't forget dryer sheets can be used for just about anything as well. Did we miss your favorite (non-Febreeze related) de-stinking method? Share your tips in the comments.
