  • Make a Japanese Lantern for Just a Few Bucks

    In Diy, Household, Diy Hacks, / 02 May 2012 / 0 comments

Make a Japanese Lantern for Just a Few BucksLooking at this photo, you'd probably never guess this lantern is constructed from manila folders and wooden skewers. With those inexpensive supplies, you can make your own version for ambient, Japanese-style lighting in your home.

Dollar Store Crafts offers a detailed tutorial from Jeanette Strole Parks showing how to turn manila folders into a lighting fixture. The folders are very opaque and golden-toned when lit; Parks advises you should look for folders without obvious printed logos. Besides the folders and wooden skewers (or chopsticks), you'll also need decorative textured paper like rice paper or colored tissue paper and some basic craft tools (e.g., hot glue gun).

The skewers are used to make a grid to support your hanging lightbulb fixture (about $5 at Ikea). (In case you're wondering about potential fire hazard: Light kits with a plastic housing or basket around them will keep the bulb from touching the paper, but the way the folders are put together, the lightbulb doesn't come within 2" on either side. You can use compact fluorescent bulbs that are cooler too.)

It's amazing the stuff you can make in a few hours with just a few dollars worth of supplies or things you have lying around already.

  • Home Heating Automation with Google Calendar

In Diy Hacks, Diy, Household, Home, Google Calendar, / 26 April 2012 / 0 comments

Home Heating Automation with Google Calendar Thought Google Calendar is just for setting up appointment reminders? Nope, you can actually remotely control and schedule your home heating with Google Calendar, as this home automation project shows.

Shane Dweller at Fern Tree Shack shows the system at work in the video above and describes the whole project on his blog, including the Google API source code for his mbed microcontroller and how he wired up the heater to the internet.

According to comments on Hack a Day, Shane's currently working on an mbed for a sprinkler system that will check weather forecasts and local rainfall to determine how long to run the sprinklers for. Practical and mind blowing!

  • Add a USB Charging Port to a Clock Radio

In Diy, Diy Hacks, Usb, Charging, Household, Space-saving, / 07 March 2012 / 0 comments

Add a USB Charging Port to a Clock RadioIf you like to use your phone in bed but have run into the all-too-common problem of the charger cord being too short—and you enjoy hacking household objects—this project is for you. Combine a USB charger with a clock radio for bedside charging.

Instructables users Nerdz, an electronics engineering student, says this simple project took him about an hour. He put the USB charger ($5 at Walmart) in where the backup battery goes in a clock radio. You basically just have to make room for the USB charger, filing down edges where needed.

And there you go, consolidate space on your side table (assuming you have a clock radio there already) and convenient charging at arm's reach.

  • Make Your Own Instant Hand Warmers in 5 Minutes

In Diy, Winter, Diy Hacks, Saving Money, Survival, Space-saving, / 24 February 2012 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Instant Hand Warmers in 5 MinutesYou know those expensive instant hand warmer packs used to thaw frozen hands out in the winter? No need to buy them. Make your own instant hot packs with ziplock bags and just one thing from the hardware store.

Instructables user junits15 posts the easy instructions. You need a large ziploc bag, a smaller one, some water, and calcium chloride ice-melt pellets from the hardware store.

Fill the large bag a quarter of the way with the ice-melt pellets. Fill the smaller ziploc bag halfway with water and seal and then put it inside the bigger bag, squeeze out the excess air and seal. Now, squeeze the smaller bag until it breaks open and the water mixes with the ice-melt pellets, which should create a warming reaction between 20 minutes and an hour according to PopSci (how long will depend on how many pellets you use).
