  • Build a DSLR Shoulder Rig

    In Photography, Diy, Filmmaking, / 05 May 2012 / 0 comments

Build a DSLR Shoulder RigIf you're a filmmaker or just like to have family videos that don't evoke The Blair Witch Project you may be interested in acquiring a shoulder mount to stabilize your DSLR camera when shooting videos. You can spend a lot of money buying a rig or build one with $25 in hardware store parts.

Instructables user benfloom assembled his shoulder rig design after his frustration at not being able to find a commercial version below $200. For this project you'll need threaded steel rod, nuts, washers, aluminum flashing, foam pipe insulation, thumb screws, wing nuts, bolts, and a few small pieces of lumber.

The source link below gives you an exact list of what you need along with additional photos and instructions, but what you're basically doing is building the frame of the shoulder rig with the wood and steel rod using nuts, bolts, and thumb screws to keep everything adjustable. The aluminum flashing and foam pipe insulation will make the shoulder mount. The author plans to expand the shoulder rig with mounts for lights and a sound recorder.

If you're just looking for stabilization you can build a smaller DIY shoulder camera stabilizer that we featured two years ago. It's less adjustable but more portable.

  • Turn an IKEA Folding Desk Into a Convertible, Hidden Computer

In Diy, Ikea, Workspace, Desk, Computer, Diy Creations, Organization, Household, Office, / 04 May 2012 / 0 comments

Turn an IKEA Folding Desk Into a Convertible, Hidden ComputerDIYer Tak took a clever IKEA product and made it even more useful, by turning it into a completely hideable workspace complete with a desktop computer inside.

IKEA's Vika Veine is a very cool desk on its own: It opens up to reveal your workspace, complete with a felt-lined inside that can be used as a bulletin board and even comes with pockets for your stuff. But what happens if you want a desktop computer at your convertible workspace? Tak has the answer:

I bought a Viewsonic LED monitor because they're super-thin, and have both a VESA mount, and an DVI jack that's parallel to the screen.

The most difficult part of this project was to drill the VESA holes through the top of the desk accurately. I countersunk them, then attached the monitor to the inside of the desk. I filled the holes on the top with some wood filler to keep it flat, then used some silicone caulk to attach the desk-pad permanently.

He says the right components are key, since there isn't a lot of room in there—but with the right LED monitor and a very thin keyboard, you can hide your entire setup (minus the tower, of course) inside your desk. Hit the link to see a bit more.

  • How to Remove Permanent Marker from Wood

How to Remove Permanent Marker from WoodRaising children is a war, and in war there's sure to be collateral damage. Case in point: this DIY-daddy's thousand-dollar dining table, which carried the mark of a little devil before it was cleaned off with a nifty household trick. The home improvement experts at Stack Exchange have the answer(s).

    Question:

I have a 3-year-old daughter. I left a black permanent marker out. The rest is history, and it seems to be, well, permanent.

How do I remove permanent marker on solid hardwood table?

See the image to the right. The top circled area shows one mark. The bottom circle shows what happened when my wife tried to scrub another mark off. Now it's permanently scuffed.

See here for a full description of the table we're working with.

    Please help!

    — Tom (originally asked here)

Answer: Use Isopropyl Alcohol (Or Booze)

Permanent marker can often be removed with isopropyl alcohol. First, assuming you still have the markers, try using isopropyl alcohol to remove it from a test surface. If it works, then try on the underside of your table to ensure it does not damage the finish. If it is safe, then go for it.

    Answer: Goof Off (or Don't)

    Goof Off

I just tried Goof Off on the underside of my table and it worked very well. Of course, the underside of my table is sealed with polyurethane.

You might just want to leave your permanent marker stain alone. This might seem like a strange attitude, but I resigned myself to marker stains years ago. Now, when I look around at the child-inflicted damage around the home, I think of it as the history of my family in this house.

    Answer: Power Sand

If your furniture is unsealed, the ink has likely permeated into the grain. In the end, it might come down to getting out the power sander.

Accepted Answer: I Figured It Out (Toothpaste)

    Toothpaste

Thanks everyone! Before I could even read any suggestions, my wife went ahead and tried using toothpaste over the mark and it has removed it well enough. Go figure. I don't even know where she found that idea, I don't like taking gambles like that, but it worked. We'll leave the scuff mark, for now.

DIY Burglar Alarm Sends You a Text Message Whenever It Detects MotionIf you want to keep an eye on your home—whether you're worried about burglars or just worried about the dog getting into places it shouldn't—this super simple DIY alarm will send you an SMS message whenever it detects motion.

We've shown you how to create a web streaming, motion-detecting surveillance system using webcams before, but if that's going a bit too all-out for you, this project is super simple, even if you aren't that experienced with electronics. In fact, it's a great way to get started with the Arduino platform. All you need is an Arduino, a motion sensor, a few wires and headers, and the code provided at the site below.
