  • Dock Designer Easily Customizes Your OS X Dock’s Look and Feel

In Docks, Downloads, Os X, Mac, Mac Os X, Customization, Fun, Desktop, / 24 February 2012 / 0 comments

Dock Designer Easily Customizes Your OS X Dock's Look and FeelOS X: If you're bored of the dull, grey dock that OS X ships with, Dock Designer will help you quickly zazz it up into something more fun.

You may have seen sites like Leopard Docks before, which despite the name, offer customized docks for OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion. The manual installation process is a bit tricky, though, and a little long. Dock Designer fixes all of that. It doesn't do a ton, but it will let you choose a new image for your dock, choose new dock indicators, switch between 2D and 3D, and add transparent separators to either side. And, if you don't like your new look, you can reset it to the default with just a few clicks. It doesn't seem to let you change the 3D dock's dock indicators, but you can still do that manually if you so desire (using the instructions over at Leopard Docks).

Dock Designer is a free download for OS X, most features are 10.7 Lion only.

  • Make a Simple Smartphone Dock Out of Two Binder Clips

In Macgyver Tips, Smartphones, Cellphones, Docks, Binder Clips, Office Supplies, Diy, Clever Uses, From The Tips Box, / 12 January 2012 / 0 comments

Make a Simple Smartphone Dock Out of Two Binder ClipsThe endlessly versatile binder clip is one of our favorite tools for MacGyver-like inventions, and reader David writes in one of his favorite creations: a 5-second smartphone dock.

We've shared one binder clip smartphone dock before, but unlike that model, this doesn't require any bending, clipping, or any other kind of DIY skills. All you need is two binder clips and a piece of paper. Clip them onto the paper, throw your phone in between the tabs and you're good to go. It works great for keeping an eye on the time, playing music, or (as David notes) getting a good steady photo from your phone's camera. This may not work with bigger, thicker phones, but you could always see if a bigger size binder clip would fit your phone if you have a monstrosity like the HTC Thunderbolt. Thanks, David!

From the Tips Box is where we round up our favorite reader submitted tips. Got a tip of your own to share? Email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips page.

Park Circa Rents Out Your Prime Parking Spot for Side CashHaving a prime parking spot in a popular neighborhood is its own perk, but making a few side bucks from it is some nice icing. Park Circa helps you rent out a sweet space, and lets those in need find it.

Park Circa is a boot-strapped startup at the moment, and as you might imagine, they've picked up the most traction in San Francisco at the moment. But it appears anyone in the U.S. can set up on Park Circa, and if someone in need of a spot is using their free iPhone app (with Android and, maybe, BlackBerry to come later), you can rent it to them for a set price, for set hours, with notes on the space for them to consider. You'd likely have questions about insurance and other issues—and Park Circa has quiet a few answers.

Park Circa is free to sign up for, with fees collected when you start making money, it appears.

CircleDock Surrounds Your Mouse with Files, Folders, and Shortcuts

Windows only: Free application CircleDock automatically puts files, folders, and shortcuts within a few pixels of your mouse when you invoke it for quick action. CircleDock is completely customizable, from the skin and hotkey to the items you place in the dock. You can rotate the items in the circular dock with your scrollwheel, which is cool despite its questionable usefulness. The app is portable, so you can toss it on your thumb drive and take it with you. CircleDock is free and open source, requires .NET 3.5. A more attractive and improved update is expected within the month. If you give it a try, let's hear what you think in the comments.
