  • Beer on Tap or in a Bottle? How to Order the Best Beer

In Drinks, Beer, Drinking, Eating Out, / 10 May 2012 / 0 comments

Beer on Tap or in a Bottle? How to Order the Best BeerMany beer aficionados prefer beer on tap over bottled beer, but tap might not always be better. Charles Bamforth, author of Beer Is Proof God Loves Us and professor of malting and brewing sciences at UC Davis, told Chow how he decides between tap or bottle.

The ideal beer may be beer on tap, but it requires the establishment to clean the lines daily:

"If you have only one or two on tap and the person knows what they're doing and at the end of the day they're cleaning the lines and then rerunning the beer through the taps to expunge any cleaning solution, at the end of the day, it has the potential to be the best."

An impressive number of beers on tap might not really serve you best, then, unless the bars and restaurants clean those lines nightly (not as common in the US as in other countries, apparently).

To get the best beer on tap, ask the bar or restaurant which beer is sold most, Bamforth advises. And for all types of beer, choose local instead of imported beer to avoid unintentional aging. (Unless, perhaps, the beer was meant to be aged in a bottle, like higher alcohol, hoppy, or darker beers.)

  • Upgrade Your Cinco de Mayo Celebration

In Cinco De Mayo, Holidays, Mexican Food, Drinking, Alcohol, / 05 May 2012 / 0 comments

Upgrade Your Cinco de Mayo CelebrationToday is Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that is based on the Battle of Puebla but is more commonly known as a celebration of Mexican heritage, mostly in the in form of booze and nachos; It's been watered down in the same way that St. Patrick's Day is now mostly about green beer.

We at Lifehacker heartily endorse celebrations and wish to offer some of our best Cinco de Mayo related tips and tricks. Feel free to include anything we've left out in the comments below.

    Food

    • Bake Tortillas Into Hard Taco Shells on Your Oven Rack Why buy inferior hard taco shells when you can make your own for pennies on the dollar.
    • Make your Own Taco Bowls by Flipping Over a Muffin Lid Likewise, if your taste for crunchy tortilla goodness involves taco salads or just festive guacamole containers.
    • Pinata sugar cookies with M&Ms inside These might be the best holiday-themed cookies ever!
    • Add Unexpected Ingredients to Change Up Your Guacamole I like the bacon guac variant best.
    • Make a "Walking Taco" in a Bag of Fritos for an Easy, Portable Snack A great way to be mobile *and* consume fried corn chips.
    • Make a Choco Taco Hey, if you're gonna have stereotypical quasi-Mexican food you might as well go all out.

    Booze

    • DIY Citrus Salt Most people love margaritas, and this five-minute trick will make everyone remember yours for having the best salt ever.
    • DIY Margarita Popsicles Since you can't use too much tequila or they won't freeze I suggest pairing these with a shot of your favorite anejo tequila.
    • Mix a Large Batch of Margaritas with an Igloo Cooler and a Garbage
      Disposal
It's probably too late to build this cocktail-dispensing monstrosity, but never too early to plan for next year.
    • Try a Beer Cocktail for Cinco de Mayo We enjoy pure beer as much as the next person, but here's something to do with the horrible beer your guests bring.
    • Use Fresh Fruit as Jell-O Shot Containers Tasty *and* intoxicating!

  • Never Forget to Refill Your Brita Pitcher with This Clever Tip

In Household, Water, Drinking, Beverages, Time Savers, Annoyances, Kitchen, / 04 May 2012 / 0 comments

Never Forget to Refill Your Brita Pitcher with This Clever TipRedditor violenciarivas shares a tip for making sure your filtered water pitcher is always full.

I know what some of you are thinking: "Uh, why don't you just remember to refill it?" You are the 1%, let me tell you—the majority of us have better things to do than sit around and refill our water pitchers when we're thirsty and have work to do, and sadly we don't realize it's empty until we're parched and forced to deal with the agonizing hell of water that is only kind of cold. If you fall into this category, here's your solution:

Fill your glass with tap water before getting the pitcher out. Pour this into the top before filling your now empty glass with the cold delicious water from the bottom.

Especially handy for those of us whose sinks are full of dirty dishes, making a faucet-to-pitcher pour nearly impossible.

Of course, be careful, since if you fill the top too much you'll spill it out everywhere when you go to pour water into your glass. Still, it's a handy routine to get into, doesn't feel like it takes a lot of time, and will make sure your water pitcher never goes empty again.

  • Use Fresh Fruit as Jell-O Shot Containers

In Drinking, Alcohol, Food, Food Hacks, Time Savers, Annoyances, Kitchen, / 07 April 2012 / 0 comments

Use Fresh Fruit as Jell-O Shot ContainersIf you're a social drinker, it's likely that from time to time you may consume Jell-O shots. If you don't want to clean up hundreds of disposable cups after the party and especially if you have a compost bin you may want to consider using fresh fruit to contain your gelatin libations.

Instructables user ModMischief came up with several inventive Jell-O shot recipes and containers, among them chocolate strawberry shots in a strawberry, gin and tonic Jell-O shots served in a cucmber, naughty shirley temple shots formed around cherries, and lime margarita shots served in a lime peel.

Most of the containers are easy to figure out. The strawberries can be hollowed out with a drinking straw and we've covered how to make cucumber shot glasses. The cherry shots are made in a muffin tin with the Jell-O forming around the cherry and released by dipping the chilled muffin pan in a sink of warm water. Finally, to make the citrus shots cut a lime/lemon/orange in half and scoop out the flesh of the fruit. Pour in the Jell-O mix and allow it to set then cut the fruit into wedges.

These are fun and instead of lots of little plastic cups to throw away you can toss the fruit peels in your compost.
