  • Repurpose Plastic Easter Eggs as Snack Containers

    In Repurpose, Easter, Holidays, Snacks, / 14 April 2012 / 0 comments

Repurpose Plastic Easter Eggs as Snack ContainersIf you have kids odds are that you have lots of plastic Easter egg containers strewn about your home. Instead of storing them until next year or (gasp) throwing them away use them as snack containers for kids or adults.

Real Simple magazine suggests using the eggs to hold Cheerios or Goldfish crackers, but they would also work well for adults to portion nuts, chunks of cheese, and strangely enough make perfect containers for hard boiled eggs.

Even if you don't have kids I bet you can score a pack of reusable plastic eggs this week much cheaper than an equivalent amount of disposable snack bags.

  • Use a Freezer Bag for Easy Deviled Eggs

In Kitchen Hacks, Holidays, Easter, Eggs, / 07 April 2012 / 0 comments

Use a Freezer Bag for Easy Deviled EggsWith tomorrow being the holiday most popularly associated with eggs, there will be millions of people preparing deviled eggs as an appetizer. To save time add your cooked egg yolks and other ingredients into a plastic freezer bag, reseal, and knead the yolks and ingredients together until you have a homogeneous mixture.

Now just cut the end of the bag and squeeze the filling into your egg whites. Instead of having to clean a spoon and a bowl and taking the time to individually fill each egg white half you just have one plastic freezer bag to throw away.

  • Make Your Own Peeps for Delicious, All-Natural Marshmallow Fun

In Food, Cooking, Diy, Marshamallows, Kitchen, Household, Candy, Natural, Easter, Peeps, / 06 April 2012 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Peeps for Delicious, All-Natural Marshmallow Fun I never really got into the Peeps craze, especially around this time of year, but I do love homemade marshmallows, and if you've never had them or made your own, you're missing out. They can be a bit messy, but this walkthrough from the folks at The Kitchn makes it look relatively easy, and the results are worth the effort.

You'll need to put a little effort into this one, and the recipe—like any candy recipe—requires a mixer and a candy thermometer, but if you have the gear to make this one happen, you won't regret it. Homemade marshmallows taste entirely different from store-bought, shelf-stable ones, and once you're addicted, it might be difficult to go back to the convenient stuff. Plus, aside from the gelatin (and maybe the vanilla extract), you probably have all of the ingredients in your kitchen already required to make these tasty treats.

The folks at The Kitchn went out and bought some rabbit and chick-shaped cookie cutters for their DIY peeps, but we've shown you how to make your own from a simple foil pan for much less. Set aside a little time to make and let them set, and while they won't have the brand name attached, these "peeps" may be a bigger hit than the originals. For the full recipe, hit the link below.

  • Cook the Perfect Boiled Egg with the Power of Science

In Cooking, Holidays, Easter, Easter Egg, Food, Food Hacks, Candy, Natural, Easter, Peeps, / 07 April 2009 / 0 comments

Cook the Perfect Boiled Egg with the Power of ScienceWhether you're preparing for some serious Easter-egg cooking or you just love a good hard-boiled egg, scientists at the University of Oslo want to help you boil the perfect egg using the power of science.

Their "Art of cooking an egg" page contains a handy little Flash application that turns variables like egg circumference, desired yolk hardness, the egg's current temperature, and your elevation, then spits out exactly how long you should boil that egg. The site is in Norwegian, but this page provides a translation (minus the Flash app)—and reader Martin offered a quick rundown of what each segment of the Flash app asks for:

1st slider: The circumference of the egg (in cm)
2nd slider: How hard you want the egg yolk to be. (Hard = Hard, Middels = Medium, Bløtt = Soft)
3rd slider: Start temprature of the egg (on the botton, its directly from the fridge. In celcius)
4th slider: How high over the sea level you are in meters. (Because water boils faster the higher you are.) moh = meters over the sea level

Once you've entered all your variables, just boil your water and hit the Play button to start the timer countdown. We're not necessarily saying you need all of these exacting measurements to successfully boil an egg, but if you've never felt like you've ever been able to get it quite right, this little app can hopefully help. While you're perfecting your egg skills, check out how to improve your egg-peeling skills and how to cook perfect scrambled eggs. Thanks Martin!
