Keep an emergency $20 in your phone case

The merits of smartphone cases are a subject of debate, but if you do use one, consider storing an emergency $20 bill between the cover and the phone.

As Reddit user Lunkavitch points out, the money could come in handy to pay a cab or lunch bill if your wallet gets stolen, or if you just forgot it at home. It may seem a little paranoid, but it's a small insurance policy that could get you out of a jam if your wallet goes missing.

  • Make an Emergency "Get Home Bag" to Keep at Work

Make an Emergency "Get Home Bag" to Keep at WorkYou might already have a 72-hour disaster kit or even a longer-term Doomsday survival kit, but what if you're caught at work when disaster strikes? If you don't already have one, create a survival kit that will help you get home from work and keep you safe for at least 24-hours.

Why do you need a Get Home Bag (GHB)? Most of us spend more time away from home than at home, and as The Art of Manliness points out, "just getting home can be a survival journey in and of itself"—whether the disaster is caused by severe weather, a blackout, terrorist attack, or other event.

Creek Stewart, author of Build the Perfect Bug Out Bag: Your 72-Hour Disaster Survival Kit, outlines all the supplies he keeps in his GHB. Not surprisingly, these include water, energy bars, and a multi-tool. Some items you might not have thought of are a paper map, paracord, small signal mirror, and headlamp. His list is more extensive than the office survival kit we've noted before. Check out Stewart's list to make sure you don't miss any items that could make all the difference when you need to get home safely.

What's in your Get Home Bag or office survival kit?

  • Keep an Emergency Photo Album in Your Phone to Quickly Provide Important Information in a Crisis

In Emergencies, Smartphones, Emergency, Cellphones, Photos, Photography, Photo Albums, Clever Uses, Diy, / 02 May 2012 / 0 comments

Keep an Emergency Photo Album in Your Phone to Quickly Provide Important Information in a CrisisYour phone's photo album is probably filled with pictures of a fun night out, family events, and too many pictures of your pet, but the most important snapshots are often of things you wouldn't naturally think to include. As Apartment Therapy Tech points out, capturing photos of your prescription medication can be incredibly useful as a reminder or an indicator when you're in an emergency. On top of that, we'd add the following:

    1. A picture of your photo ID. We'd recommend blurring out any sensitive information you don't want to share—the goal is just to identify who you are. That said, you might want to include your phone number on the ID in case you lose your phone and someone needs to contact you.
    2. Your health insurance card.
    3. Your auto insurance card (if you have one).
    4. Your car's license plate (if you have a car).

Anything else you'd keep in your emergency album? Share your ideas in the comments.

  • The TOOOL Emergency Lock-Pick Card Fits in Your Wallet, Gets You Back Inside When You’re In a Bind

The TOOOL Emergency Lock-Pick Card Fits in Your Wallet, Gets You Back Inside When You're In a BindWe've all locked ourselves out of our home at least once or twice, but locking yourself out without a way to get back in—like a phone or a roommate—can be pretty stressful. This snap-apart card fits in your wallet and turns into a full lockpicking kit in seconds.

We've talked about how to pick a lock before, and even given it a shot ourselves on video (with great results). It's a great way to get yourself out of a bind, or just gain a little understanding on your security (not to mention impress your friends). But in a real emergency, you probably don't have your lock picking kit hanging around in your back pocket. That's where the TOOOL Emergency Lock-Pick Card comes in. It's the size of a credit card and snaps apart to create a full lock picking kit for any emergency. You can't put it back together, but if you need this that often, you probably need to work on remembering your keys better.

You can grab the TOOOL Emergency Lock-Pick Card for $30 at the Maker Shed. Hit the link below to check it out, and as reader process91 notes, make sure to understand the laws about carrying lockpicking tools in your area before buying.
