  • Faviconize Google Adds Small Icons to Google Search Results for Easier Scanning

In Search, Search Engines, Favicons, Icons, Firefox, Chrome, Google Chrome, Downloads, User Scripts, / 20 April 2012 / 0 comments

Faviconize Google Adds Small Icons to Google Search Results for Easier ScanningChrome/Firefox with Greasemonkey: This extension adds favicons—those little icons you see in your address bar when you visit a page—to Google's search results, so you can more easily see what site each link is coming from.

Not only does this spice up your bland search results a little bit, but it makes it a lot easier to sift through the stuff you don't want, and find the stuff you do. I've found it's particularly useful when I'm searching for specific problems—I can easily tell which links are from a forum and which are blog posts that probably aren't closely related to my problem. There aren't any settings you have to fiddle with, either—just install it, and enjoy your new search results page.

Faviconize Google is a free extension for Chrome, and a free user script for Firefox with Greasemonkey installed (the user script version doesn't seem to work on Chrome).

  • Icon Badger Provides Favicon Notifications on Pinned Tabs

In Chrome Extensions, Downloads, Chrome, Favicons, Firefox, Chrome, Google Chrome, Downloads, User Scripts, / 31 March 2012 / 0 comments

Icon Badger Provides Favicon Notifications on Pinned TabsChrome: If you like to pin your tabs in Chrome you may have noticed that you usually lose new item notifcations that several sites such as Gmail, Facebook, and others add to the page title. With Chrome extension Icon Badger many of these notifications are moved to the favicon so you can know when your favorite sites are updated even when their tabs are pinned.

The only caveat to keep in mind is that not every site with notifications is supported in Icon Badger. As of this post it works with Facebook, GetGlue, Gmail, Google Reader, Landgrab.net, Pinboard.in, Twitter, and Tumblr.

  • Fix Unread Gmail Favicons in Better Gmail 2 and Greasemonkey

In Updates, Better Gmail, Favicons, Gmail, Email, Email Alerts, Greasemonkey, Firefox, User Scripts, User Script, Downloads, / 20 November 2009 / 0 comments

Firefox: Gmail recently made a few tweaks to its message count API, leaving tools like the favicon message indicators by Eric Bogs and Peter Wooley, along with Gina's own Better Gmail 2 Firefox extension, broken. Now they're fixed.

Bogs and Wooley, whose clever user scripts cleverly show your unread message count in your Gmail or Google Apps mail's browser tab icon, both updated their code to adapt to Gmail's API changes. Gina, whose Better Gmail 2 extension utilizes Bogs' and Wooley's scripts, has re-rolled those changes into her extension.

Those with Better Gmail 2 already installed should see update notices soon. If you're seeing only installation errors instead, hit the link for a direct (but non-updating) link. If you're rocking just Greasemonkey and one of these two scripts, head to one of their UserScripts.org pages and click "Install" to update your browser.

  • Icon Grabber Converts Favicons to Image Files

In Icons, Favicons, Webapps, Web Applications, Images, Pictures, Web Apps, Firefox, User Scripts, User Script, Downloads, / 02 March 2009 / 0 comments

Web application Icon Grabber takes a Favicon, the little icon in the address bar, and saves it to PNG, GIF or JPG format from any web site.

Using the web application couldn't be simpler—just paste in the URL, select the output format, click the Grab It button, and then right-click and save the grabbed icon from the page. Once you've saved the icon you can use it in a dock or launcher application that supports regular image files. Note that even without using this application, you can download the favicon as an ICO file from almost any website by simply appending /favicon.ico to the end of the URL, and using the right-click menu to save to a file—but converting icons to image format takes another step.

Icon Grabber is free, simple, and easy to use. To create your own Favicons, use previously mentioned Favicon Generator, then assign them to any Firefox bookmark with the previously mentioned Favicon Picker extension, or you can just block distracting animated favicons.
