  • The Sea at Sunset Home Screen

In Featured Home Screen, Home Screen, Customization, Wallpaper, Skins, Themes, Android, REPUBLISHED, / 22 May 2012 / 0 comments

The Sea at Sunset Home ScreenReader andy_mcname put together this beautiful yet practical home screen using just a few simple tools. Here's how.

This was my first real attempt at making a homescreen that had any form of style to it. I was always a believer of usability before style, so I tried to keep the theme as minimal as possible while still keeping it practical, as I cannot stand having to sift through menu after menu to get where you want to be. The photo was taken by myself overlooking Belfast Lough, and the tools I used were:

    • ADWLauncher EX for the five column screen, removal of status bar etc.
    • The Minimalist theme for ADW. This gives all the icons as well as the transparent dock.
    • Minimalistic Text for the clock and weather widgets
    • MagicLocker for the lock screen
    • The Typophone theme for MagicLocker

  • The Los Angeles Home Screen

In Featured Home Screen, Home Screen, Customization, Wallpaper, Skins, Themes, Androidrepublished, REPUBLISHED, / 16 May 2012 / 0 comments

The Los Angeles Home ScreenReader rustyhalos takes the text-based home screen to new heights with her "Love Letter to Los Angeles" home screen.

Click on the image above to get a closer look.

This is the set-up I'm currently using, entitled "Love Letter to Los Angeles." Why something so sappy, you ask? Well, I'm leaving my hometown of (you guessed it) Los Angeles, very soon, maybe for good, so I'm feeling a little sentimental. I found a small graphic of the Los Angeles skyline floating around online, and thought I would edit it in Photoshop and turn it into a wallpaper for my phone. Approximately eight hours and endless bouts with Minimalistic Text later, this was the result.

The set-up is based around one of my favorite quotes about Los Angeles: "Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles", from Frank Lloyd Wright. I used that quote on the lockscreen, courtesy of WidgetLocker, along with a simple slider I found on XDA. The rest of the lockscreen is simple Minimalistic Text and Missed It, with little custom tweaks here and there.

The main screens were created using Minimalistic Text, Metrostation Icons, Apex Launcher (7 rows, 6 columns), a news widget, and the Simple Calendar widget.

I'm running an unofficial version of Cyangenmod 9 on my HTC Sensation. You can find more details on my MyColorscreen page.

  • The 8-Bit Avengers Home Screen

In Featured Home Screen, Home Screen, Customization, Wallpaper, Skins, Themes, Android, REPUBLISHED, P, / 08 May 2012 / 0 comments

The 8-Bit Avengers Home ScreenReader Rob created this home screen with an old school look and some timeless super heroes.

    Here's another theme I've been...assembling. I'm using:

    • Here's the original 8-bit Avengers artwork for the wallpaper. I stumbled across it while looking for a t-shirt. For my phone I recreated a vector version of it since I initially wanted to have a close up of individual characters on my screens to the left and right. That was just a bit too much for my liking though.
    • ADWLauncher EX for the 5x5 screens, hidden notification bar, etc.
    • Minimalistic Text for the date.
    • BeWeather is my weather widget of choice this time around. I made the weather icons again. Actually a couple different sets in this theme...to varying degrees of success.
    • Widgetsoid for the flashlight toggle. The icon you see for it is actually an image I set as the background of the 1x1 flashlight widget with the real toggle icon hidden.
    • WidgetLocker is handling the lock screen. I usually don't use anything there, but so far so good. The camera and lock options are hidden until you touch the black ICS-style unlocker in the middle. They fade in and out nicely.

I tried to find an icon set in a similar style and came up with very little worthwhile. There was one theme I found in the store but the selection of icons was extremely limited...and it was like $1.25.

I wanted to keep things as consistent as possible so I just made a matching set of app and weather icons in the same color pallete and style as the wallpaper.

I'm up to 45 icons so far. I'll probably try to get a set up on my DeviantArt page after I flesh it out a little more and adjust some (here's a bunch of them on Dropbox). Possibly the weather set as well but it also needs a little work.

For more Avengers goodness, check out our previous Avengers Assemble home screen, too.

  • The Morning Dew Home Screen

In Featured Home Screen, Home Screen, Customization, Wallpaper, Skins, Themes, Android, REPUBLISHED, P, / 01 May 2012 / 0 comments

The Morning Dew Home ScreenFeatured Home Screen veteran reader dandylion shares another simple, elegant home screen using the Sweeterhome launcher.

For this particular setup (his best yet, in our opinion), dandylion is using:

    • WidgetLocker for the custom lock screen
    • Minimalistic Text for clock and weather for both the lock screen and the home screen
    • The Missed It! widget for missed call, text, and email notifications on the lock screen
    • Circle Battery Widget for the lock screen battery indicator
    • The Sweeterhome launcher for the home screen, currently available in beta
    • Ultimate Custom Clock widget for the date and battery icons next to the clock
    • Minimal Reader for the news and RSS articles on the rightmost screen
    • The Project Glass iconset by PS_Design
    • A modified version of this wallpaper to include the grey bar at the bottom, where the widgets reside. You can download the modified version here.
    • From dandylion: "The blue line on the home screen docks has been made using the launcher's 'plain colour blocks' feature—it allows you to place color blocks of any dimension and any color or gradient anywhere on the home screens."

You can find more details at dandylion's DeviantART page and more home screen ideas on his MyColorscreen profile.
