  • QtADB Brings Android File Management, App Installation, and More to Your Desktop

In Android, Android Rooting, Command Line, Terminal, File Management, File Managers, Smartphones, Clips, / 18 January 2012 / 0 comments

QtADB Brings Android File Management, App Installation, and More to Your Desktop Windows/Mac/Linux and Android: If you've ever tinkered with your phone, you've probably heard of ADB, the command line debug tool for Android. If you're not in love with the command line, though, QtADB brings ADB's file management, app installation, and more to a friendly GUI.

Whether you're tweaking a few system files on your phone or trying to root it, sometimes you have no other choice but to run some commands in an ADB shell. The command line can be intimidating, though, not to mention slow and arduous if you haven't beefed up your command line ninja skills. If you just need to perform a couple quick tasks, qtADB makes the process easy by bringing tons of ADB's most common uses—from file management to app installation to backups—to a friendly desktop program. It even contains a built-in ADB shell if you find you need to run a manual command or two. Check out the video above to see it in action, and hit the link below to download it.

QtADB is a free download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, and works with Android devices.

  • Get More Control Over Finder’s Copy Dialog with the Option Key

In Mac Tips, Finder, File Copying, File Management, Annoyances, Mac OS X Lion, Lion, Mac Os 10.7, / 27 October 2011 / 0 comments

Get More Control Over Finder's Copy Dialog with the Option KeyWhen you copy multiple files in OS X and the destination folder already has files of the same name, you don't have a lot of choice over what to do—you can either cancel the copy, or replace the files. This little trick gives you a bit more power.

It may not be as easy as Windows 8's new copy dialog, but OS X actually has a few hidden options if, say, you want to keep some of the old files and replace other ones. Web site Mac OS X Hints explains:

In Lion, one of the new features is to be able to 'Keep Both Files' when copying multiple files in Finder. While this is useful there are many times when the old 'Skip' behavior is better suited to the task. Well, the (now) obvious way to do this is to just hold the 'Option' key, and then 'Keep Both File' changes to 'Skip.'

The "press Option for more options" rule has been around for awhile on OS X, but this particular tweak is Lion-only. It's tricks like these that make new versions of an OS great, even if the big features aren't all that spectacular.

  • OpenWith Enhanced Makes It Easier to Manage File Type Associations

In Windows Downloads, Utilities, File Management, Files, Windows, Downloads, Lion, Mac Os 10.7, / 30 August 2011 / 0 comments

OpenWith Enhanced Makes It Easier to Manage File Type AssociationsWindows: Whether Windows isn't sure how to open a specific file, or you'd rather just use a different program than the default, you probably have to deal with Windows' Open With menu from time to time. OpenWith Enhanced replaces this basic tool with one that tells you which programs are the best options, lets you remove associations, and even change icons for specific file types.

OpenWith Enhanced Makes It Easier to Manage File Type AssociationsWindows' Open With menu is fine, but it's pretty basic. OpenWith Enhanced gives you a bit more control, recommending certain apps for the job over others, as well as recommending apps you don't yet have installed (and giving you a link to download them). It also adds links to the bottom of the Open With window that let you remove the file association entirely, and edit the "Open With" context menu to remove the clutter. It'll even let you change the icon associated with a specific file type. Sometimes the recommendations are a little off (why would I want to open a PDF with Notepad?), but otherwise it's a useful addition to Windows. It's a really simple install, too—just run the installer and Windows will automatically deliver these enhancements whenever you enter its regular Open With dialog.

OpenWith Enhanced is a free download for Windows only.
