  • Keep Celery Fresh by Wrapping in Aluminum Foil

In Food Hacks, Produce, Aluminum Foil, Food, Food Storage, / 26 May 2012 / 0 comments

Keep Celery Fresh by Wrapping in Aluminum FoilIt's tempting to buy the big bag of celery at Costco but you'll seldom use it all by the time it starts to fade. If you wrap the celery in a plastic bag and then wrap that bag in aluminum foil you can get a much longer refrigerated shelf life.

Prepper weblog Preparing One Day at a Time claims they've kept celery fresh using this technique for more than a month. I can't verify that as of right now, but next time I go to Costco I'm going to give it a try.

What methods do you use to preserve produce in your fridge? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Store Your Produce Without Plastic Wrap or Containers and Keep Fruits and Veggies Fresher, Longer

In Food, Storage, Plastic, Food Storage, Kitchen, Household, Produce, Vegetables, Fruits, Freshness, Kitchen Tips, / 11 May 2012 / 0 comments

Store Your Produce Without Plastic Wrap or Containers and Keep Fruits and Veggies Fresher, Longer Plastic wrap and storage containers definitely have their place in most kitchens, but if you have no love for the stuff and wish there were a way to store your vegetables and produce without resorting to disposable zipper bags or a fridge full of containers, you do have other options to keep your food fresh.

Blogger Beth at My Plastic Free Life is on a personal crusade against plastic, and regardless of whether or not you agree with her reasons, she has a laundry list of suggestions for proper storage of fruits and vegetables if you either don't want to or don't have plastic containers or baggies to keep them fresh. For example, instead of keeping asparagus in a baggie, store the bunch upright in a small bowl with a little water in the base at room temperature—they'll keep for days, even outside of the fridge. Plus, the water keeps the bottoms of the asparagus from getting woody, meaning you snap off less prior to cooking and keep more of it on your plate. Many of the suggestions on her list actually keep produce fresher longer than storing them in baggies or the plastic sleeves you may have brought home from the store.

The list isn't perfect however—some vegetables call for airtight seals, which most people wouldn't have unless they had reusable plastic storage containers, but there are other options if you're as committed to using less plastic as she is. What do you think? A lot of fuss just to live without plastic, or some genuinely useful ways to keep fresh produce fresh when you get it home from the store? Any other alternative storage methods to share? Sound off in the comments below.

  • Make and Store a Salad that Will Stay Fresh and Crisp All Week Long

In Food, Health, Salad, Greens, Freshness, Food Storage, Cooking, Kitchen, Household, Freshness, Kitchen Tips, / 20 April 2012 / 0 comments

Make and Store a Salad that Will Stay Fresh and Crisp All Week Long If you're no big fan of salad-in-a-bag (or even if you are) and want a healthier, homemade alternative, there are plenty of ways to store lettuce for days—even weeks at a time, but this tip from the folks at Generation X Finance isn't just how to store lettuce, but how to keep a whole, seasoned, tasty salad fresh in the fridge for a whole week, ready to portion out whenever you get hungry.

This method is pretty close to one of my all-time favorites, the lettuce rolled up in a bath towel (although I use paper towels) method. In this case, you'll want to prep the salad as though you're going to eat it. Chop the lettuce to your desired size, give it a good rinse, and then run it through a salad spinner—this part is important, because moisture is the enemy of crisp lettuce. Put your lettuce into a nice big bowl, and drape a paper towel or two over the top so moisture doesn't settle on the leaves while your salad sits in the fridge. Cover the whole thing with a really tight seal of plastic wrap, and store. A little salt and pepper or seasoning can punch up the flavor—as long as you add it before serving! Salt draws out moisture, which is the enemy of freshness!

Plus, they recommend making sure to stir up the salad a bit every time you take some out, and replacing the paper towel if you notice it starting to get a bit damp—both steps will keep moisture away, help your bowl of salad last longer in the fridge, and save you money.

A fresh, tasty salad is a great way to get more leafy greens into your diet, whether it's a side at dinner or an impromptu snack when you're rummaging through the fridge, but I've found that bags of salad and re-closable plastic bins of salad both start to rot from the inside out pretty quickly. This method might be worth a shot. Do you have a favorite way to store lettuce—or a whole salad—to keep it fresh and crisp?

  • Separate Bananas to Slow Down Their Ripening

In Food Hacks, Food, Kitchen, Fruit, Food Storage, Food Storage, Cooking, Kitchen, Household, Freshness, Kitchen Tips, / 07 March 2012 / 0 comments

Separate Bananas to Slow Down Their RipeningOne of the food tips that I've heard before is to separate bananas at the top to keep them from ripening quickly, but I never understood why or saw this in action. This week's Banana Experiment proves it's true, however: if you want to hold onto your bananas for longer, separate them at the stem.

I got the bananas in the picture above on Monday, and separated the three on the right, which are clearly still greener than the ones at left, just two days later.

Tammy's Recipes notes that the reason bananas ripen more quickly when they aren't separated is because they emit ethylene gas. Also, if you do want to ripen bananas more quickly, you can put them in a brown paper bag (or use rice or newspaper perhaps).

Got a food hack or fruit tip for us? Post it in the comments!
