  • Assemble an Affordable Standing Desk from Ikea Parts

In Ikea Hacks, Standing Desk, Diy, Furniture, Workspaces, / 26 May 2012 / 0 comments

Assemble an Affordable Standing Desk from Ikea PartsStanding desks have become enormously popular in the past few years as using them relieves back pain and results in a less sedentary workday. Nice commercial standing desks can be expensive, but when we want to put something together that looks nice and performs well at a budget we need look no further than to our friends at Ikea Hackers.

This standing desk project uses the base from an Utby bar table, a Vika Amon table surface, four Capita legs and an Ekby Jarpen shelf for the riser. The best part is that you don't need to modify anything, all you're doing is putting the Vika Amon top on the assembled Utby table and attaching the Capita legs to the Ekby Jarpen shelf to use as a monitor riser. You're looking at around $215 and an hour's time to put this together. You can lessen the cost by skipping the Vika Amon and using the brown-black finish that comes with the Utby bar table.

This design is similar to an adjustable Ikea standing desk we covered two years ago, but I think the ease of assembly and the look make this version another solid choice and in the same $200 price rangel.

  • Make Your Own Wood Butter to Keep Your Wooden Utensils and Furniture Looking Lovely

In Household, Diy, Wood, Maintenance, Utensils, Furniture, Cutting Boards, Mineral Oil, Beeswax, / 17 May 2012 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Wood Butter to Keep Your Wooden Utensils and Furniture Looking Lovely Wood utensils aren't too difficult to care for. but over time however, even the best wooden spoons, bowls, cutting boards, and even furniture like desks and chairs start to show their age. Thankfully you can bring them back to life with this recipe for "wood butter," which is essentially a canned mix of beeswax and mineral oil. Keep it in a jar or form it into bars and apply to any wood utensil you own that needs a little restoration.

Over at Creative Culinary, this recipe for a huge batch of wood butter calls for 8 ounces of pure beeswax (they reccomend beeswax pellets, available at Amazon) and 32 ounces of mineral oil. Melt your beeswax in a container sitting in boiling water, and warm up the mineral oil just a bit so it'll mix. Then mix the two together, pour into jars or molds, and set aside to cool and set up. Your final product, once cool and firm, will be soft enough that you can rub it onto your wooden utensils and cutting boards, or even scratched up chair legs and furniture. Plus, the application will give them all a good, healthy shine and help protect them from further wear and tear.

We've discussed how mineral oil is essential to good care for your cutting boards (and Alton Brown agrees), but the addition of beeswax gives you a nice solid that moisturizes and coats at the same time. What do you think? Many of the commenters at Creative Culinary propose making wood butter, putting it in jars, and giving it away with artisan cutting boards. Worth a shot? Let us know what you think in the comments.

  • Create a Large Mobile Workstation with Built-in Storage out of IKEA Bookshelves and Some Board

In Diy, Ikea Hacks, Ikea, Furniture, Desks, Workspace, Diy Creations, Mineral Oil, Beeswax, / 11 May 2012 / 0 comments

Create a Large Mobile Workstation with Built-in Storage out of IKEA Bookshelves and Some BoardNeed a big space to work? Need lots of storage? Need to be able to move it easily? This IKEA hack from Panyl—a company that's turned IKEA hacking into a business—can provide all three.

Because the workstation (pictured above) is so large, it's not that cheap. Of course, you could make a slightly smaller version and cut your costs significantly. Here's what Panyl says you'll need:

    (6) 2 x 4 IKEA Expedit bookshelves @ $89.99 each = $540
    (10) 4" industrial casters @ $3.00 each = $30
    (1) 8' x 10' x ⅝" plywood, ripped in half @ $20 = $20
    (1) 10 'x 4' x ½ hardboard sheet @ $20 = $20
    (1) 10' x 4'x ¼ opaque white acrylic sheet @ $250 = $250
    (30) 1 ¾" drywall screws @ $0.10 each = $3
    (16) Assorted Simpson ties @ $1 each = $16

If you've got the space and need the storage, it's definitely a cool workstation that doesn't seem any harder to put together than your standard IKEA furniture. For in-depth instructions, hit up the full post on Panyl's blog.

  • DIY Storage Sofa

In Diy, Furniture, Storage, Sofa, Couch, Woodworking, Sewing, Mineral Oil, Beeswax, / 28 April 2012 / 0 comments

DIY Storage SofaDIY and Household blogger Ana White's site shares an easy-to-construct DIY sofa that offers 2 large storage spaces beneath the seat. Normally DIY sofas are expensive due to buying upholstery foam, but this design uses a 3-inch thick camping mattress as the seat.

Full plans, photos, and step-by-step directions can be found at the source link below, but you'll need 6 yards of upholstery, 2.5 yards of burlap, pillow stuffing, 2 sheets of ¼" plywood, and around 8 boards in various sizes. Plan to spend around $100 plus the camping mattress which the author found for $30 but can vary widely. Twin bed mattress toppers would probably work fine as well.

You'll need basic woodworking and sewing skills, but the project doesn't require any fancy wood cuts or stitches so it should be easy to build for novices.

When you're finished you'll have a cozy, sturdy sofa that looks modern and has 2 storage compartments that measure 27" x 35" x 10" which is perfect to hold pillows and blankets to use the couch as a guest bed.
