  • Turn a Soda Bottle into a Worry-Free Self-Watering Planter

In Clever Uses, Diy, Gardening, Plants, Water, Household, Projects, Garden, Home, / 29 May 2012 / 0 comments

Turn a Soda Bottle into a Worry-Free Self-Watering PlanterThis inexpensive DIY project makes starting or growing plants a whole lot easier by automatically keeping the soil at just the right moisture level. All you need is a 2 liter bottle and some string.

ASBloom shows you how to make these clever planters on the Skruben blog. Basically, you cut the bottle in half, and thread some string or yarn through the bottle cap. Then invert the top half into the base and add your plants and soil.

The yarn acts as a wick and the plants will take the water as they need it. Even better for those of us with black thumbs: The clear bottles help you see when the water needs refilling.

(Note: If you need a larger planter, you can instead use a milk jug and some foam for your automatic watering needs.)

  • Make Any Room in Your Home Feel Bigger with a Little Paint, Some Mirrors, and Clear Objects

Make Any Room in Your Home Feel Bigger with a Little Paint, Some Mirrors, and Clear ObjectsBig spaces can look cramped and small spaces can look enormous. This is often due to simple methods of decoration and arrangement. How-to illustrator Yumi Sakugawa offers up several suggestions to help make the most of your space.

Among them, she suggests keeping walking pathways unblocked and staying organized—which are kind of a given, but also to create the illusion of more space with paint, mirrors, and clear objects. For example, a glass coffee table is mostly transparent, making it feel like it takes up less space than it does. Also, large mirrors can give the illusion of added depth to keep the space from feeling cramped. Finally, adding color to your walls will make them feel less-cramped. White walls are often thought to be the best choice for adding the illusion of greater depth, but light colors seem to do that better.

If you're not just looking to make your home feel bigger but want to make it look better, too, check out our guide to basic home design on the cheap.

  • A Five-Minute Routine to Keep Your Bathroom Clean

In Cleaning, Home, Household, Chores, Time Management, Design, Interior Design, Cleaning, Clutter, Housecleaning, / 23 May 2012 / 0 comments

A Five-Minute Routine to Keep Your Bathroom CleanCleaning the bathroom may very well be the worst of all the household chores, but Apartment Therapy has put together a quick five minute daily routine that can save you the suffering of scrubbing for hours on end.

The basic idea of Apartment Therapy's routine is to break bathroom cleaning into five 60 second chunks that you can do at any point in the day. Here's the basic breakdown:

    • Minute one: clearing off surfaces.
    • Minute two: surface cleaning.
    • Minute three: straightening.
    • Minute four: wipe down mirrors and fixtures.
    • Minute five: assess and wipe down anything else.

You can mix things up a bit to fit your needs. For instance, my bathroom is the size of a small closet so clearing off surfaces is pretty much non-existant, but I could spend that minute sweeping instead. The important part to remember is to keep it short and do it daily so you don't have to do a deep scrub down the line. Head over to Apartment Therapy for a breakdown of each minute and more cleaning suggestions.

  • Bandits Are Tough Rubber Bands with Hooks that Secure and Hang Just About Anything

In Stuff We Like, Organization, Cable Management, Storage, Home, Household, Interior Design, Cleaning, Clutter, Housecleaning, / 18 May 2012 / 0 comments

Bandits Are Tough Rubber Bands with Hooks that Secure and Hang Just About AnythingBandits are very simple to understand: they're a rubber band with a hook. This may not seem extremely compelling at first glance, but there's actually a lot you can do with them. They can be used to hang a water bottle on your bike, your sunglasses from your car's rearview mirror, tools on a ladder when you need to set them somewhere, and virtually anything you can think of.

Aside from just hanging stuff, as you can see from the above image they're good for simple binding, too. Where a rubber band is difficult to get around large (or at least long) objects, because of the hook the Bandit can do this very easily. One great application is cable management. You could bind all your cables together with a Bandit or two and then hang the cables anywhere using the hooks. This way you can easily keep your cables out of site but also take them down and unbind them very easily if you need to make any additions or alterations to the group. That's the best use in my opinion, but they're pretty versatile so you have a lot of options.

The downside might be the price, but possibly not. You get 10 Bandits for $10. At $1 each, it seems like a lot when compared to rubber bands. On the other hand, they're tough so it's not like they have the shelf life of a rubber band either. You can find them a little cheaper on Amazon through third-party sellers, but hopefully these will end up being reasonably popular and Quirky will eventually cut the price. $10 isn't unreasonable if you put these Bandits to good use, but at, say, $5 a pack they'd be a no-brainer.
