  • Make Any Room in Your Home Feel Bigger with a Little Paint, Some Mirrors, and Clear Objects

In Infographics, Apartment, Home, Household, Decoration, Design, Interior Design, Cleaning, Clutter, Housecleaning, / 23 May 2012 / 0 comments

Make Any Room in Your Home Feel Bigger with a Little Paint, Some Mirrors, and Clear ObjectsBig spaces can look cramped and small spaces can look enormous. This is often due to simple methods of decoration and arrangement. How-to illustrator Yumi Sakugawa offers up several suggestions to help make the most of your space.

Among them, she suggests keeping walking pathways unblocked and staying organized—which are kind of a given, but also to create the illusion of more space with paint, mirrors, and clear objects. For example, a glass coffee table is mostly transparent, making it feel like it takes up less space than it does. Also, large mirrors can give the illusion of added depth to keep the space from feeling cramped. Finally, adding color to your walls will make them feel less-cramped. White walls are often thought to be the best choice for adding the illusion of greater depth, but light colors seem to do that better.

If you're not just looking to make your home feel bigger but want to make it look better, too, check out our guide to basic home design on the cheap.

There are plenty of great tips to get started on being a more persuasive individual. For some in-depth information, be sure to check out our guide.

  • Long Commutes Are Sucking the Life Out of You: Shortening Yours by 20 Minutes Could Save Your Health

In Health, Infographics, Commute, Cars, Traffic, Manipulation, Interior Design, Cleaning, Clutter, Housecleaning, / 09 May 2012 / 0 comments

Long Commutes Are Sucking the Life Out of You: Shortening Yours by 20 Minutes Could Save Your HealthLong drives to and from work don't just suck up your time; these long commutes may also be hazardous to your health. Besides draining you mentally and forcing you to sit for extended periods through traffic jams, long commutes are linked to less sleep, high cholesterol, and obesity.

This infographic from College@Home spells out the mental and physical impact of commuting (and also explains where traffic comes from). The more time you spend commuting, the more you worry and the greater your health risks—partly because sitting too much wrecks your health and also because commuting is just plain stressful. A recent study of 4,300 people in Texas further supports previous studies on the ill effects of commuting, linking long commutes to less physical activity, excess belly fat, and higher blood pressure.

It isn't easy to change your commuting time, but it may definitely pay off. Shortening your commute by 20 minutes might lower your risk of neck and back pain by 14%, obesity by 20%, and heart attack by 300% (see how different commuting times affect your health in this Gallup survey). Besides the health benefits, moving closer to work can save you $795 a year for each mile). If you can't move or change your commute, this is just another reason to find more ways to move during the day and try to convince your boss to let you work from home.

  • Identify and Avoid Signs of Burnout with This Infographic

In Burnout, Stress, Energy, Work, Jobs, Careers, Work-life Balance, Infographics, Clutter, Housecleaning, / 03 May 2012 / 0 comments

Identify and Avoid Signs of Burnout with This Infographic We've discussed how dangerous burnout can be and what you can do about it in the past, but if you need a simple refresher, this infographic from the folks at The Simple Dollar does a great job of distilling the basics into an easy to read visual.

Normally infographics have an awful tendency to let meaningful information get lost in pretty pictures, but this one does a great job (although it's a little tough to read) of outlining some common symptoms of burnout, like depression, insomnia, and frequent illness. It leaves off resentment, but that could be a cause and not so much a symptom.

Either way, once you've recognized the signs of depression, the infographic does have some concrete suggestions for you, namely making sure you get enough sleep each night, working out and making it a habit, and remembering to take your breaks and vacations. That last tip is one we can't overstate enough; breaks and vacations are critical, and they give you a chance to recharge, cool off, and slowly recover from the building fatigue and resentment that comes with any job, even if you love what you do.

Identify and Avoid Signs of Burnout with This Infographic How do you keep burnout at bay? Is it all about taking vacations at the right time, or do you have another technique that's served you well? Let's hear it in the comments below.
