  • Use a Garlic Press to Juice Key Limes

In Clever Uses, Household, Juice, Kitchen, Limes, Garlic Press, / 29 May 2012 / 0 comments

Use a Garlic Press to Juice Key Limes There's no shortage of ways to get most juice from a citrus fruit, but this one is pretty handy if you don't have any other tools available but need to get the most juice out of a pile of key limes: use a garlic press. Half of a key lime fits in nicely, and the pressing action is the same as a handheld juicer.

You'll want to use a freshly washed garlic press for this trick so your key lime juice doesn't taste vaguely like garlic, but the photo above speaks for itself. As long as you can get the halves of key lime into the press, it'll work like a charm, and keep all of the pulp out of your dish.

Of course, your key limes have to fit, and most garlic presses may not be large enough to fit your lime halves, but if this works for you, it can save you a lot of time. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Replace Your Cabinet Kickplate with Tiny Drawers to Increase Storage Space

In Weekend Projects, Storage, Organization, Kitchen, Limes, Garlic Press, / 27 May 2012 / 0 comments

Replace Your Cabinet Kickplate with Tiny Drawers to Increase Storage SpaceLive in an extremely small house/apartment and looking for any way to increase your storage space? Tiny house dweller Tammy Strobel developed several innovative "hidden in plain sight" storage areas for her 128 square-foot home including small drawers under her kitchen cabinets where most people normally just install a kickplate.

The drawers don't store an incredible amount; maybe two reams of paper side-by-side. In their tiny home it serves as an electronics cord and hardware "junk" drawer. Little storage areas like this not only increase the total storage capacity but they also keep clutter down—an especially needful activity in a tiny house.

No instructions are posted on Tammy's weblog Rowdy Kittens, but just about any standard kitchen cabinet drawer instructions should work that don't require extra height for the drawer hardware. This DIY project is definitely not for everyone, but if you live in a studio apartment or a tiny house it might be up your alley.

  • Make Your Own Magic Shell Ice Cream Topping At Home and Dress Up Your Desserts

In Food, Diy, Dessert, Ice Cream, Magic Shell, Chocolate, Food Hacks, Kitchen, Household, Coooking, Coconut, Coconut Oil, / 25 May 2012 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Magic Shell Ice Cream Topping At Home and Dress Up Your Desserts Magic Shell ice cream topping, or that chocolate syrup that hardens as soon as it comes in contact with the cold ice cream in a bowl, is tasty, but it's made with a world of stabilizers and other chemicals with long names. Plus, it can get pricey for the amount you get. Surprisingly, it's super easy to make at home, with ingredients that you may already have in your pantry. All you need is chocolate and coconut oil.

The best part of this trick is that you can use whatever chocolate you like. If you prefer the rich creaminess of milk chocolate, you can use that, but if you like the bitter, full body of high-percentage cacao, you can use that too. The recipe calls for seven ounces of roughly chopped chocolate and two tablespoons of coconut oil. Combine the two and heat slowly in a double-boiler or microwave in short bursts, stirring in between, and you're all set. You'll need to microwave it before use (since it doesn't have the stabilizers to keep it liquid in the fridge), but that's a pretty small price to pay for a delicious dessert treat.

It's easy to make, and keeps in the fridge in an airtight container. What do you think? Worth a shot at home, or will you spring for the store-bought stuff? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
