  • Clean Out and Customize Lion’s Launchpad

In Mac OS X Tips, Mac OS X Lion, Lion, Mac Os X, / 04 January 2012 / 0 comments

Clean Out and Customize Lion's LaunchpadLion's Launchpad feature is a handy way to quickly launch apps, but when it's filled with every program in your app directory, it's a little less useful. Macworld shares a way to completely remove everything from Launchpad and start fresh.

If you just want to get rid of apps, you can hold down the Option key with Launchpad running and delete a few select apps, but if you want to start with a totally clean slate, you need to wipe out the contents of the database with a Terminal command:

sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps; DELETE from groups WHERE title<>''; DELETE from items WHERE rowid>2;"; Killall Dock

Now Launchpad is completely empty, so you can customize it as you see fit by dragging apps directly to the Launchpad icon in the Dock. It's a handy way to make Launchpad a bit more useful than the Applications folder you already have.

  • Add a Custom Message to Your Mac OS X Login Screen to Help People Contact You If Your Mac is Lost

In Mac OS X Tips, Mac OS X Lion, Security, Lost Laptop, Laptops, Computers, Mac Os X, Mac, Lifehacker Video, Video, Clips, / 03 January 2012 / 0 comments

Add a Custom Message to Your Mac OS X Login Screen to Help People Contact You If Your Mac is Lost Mac OS X Lion has a new feature that lets you add a custom message to your login screen. It's easy to set up, and a good way to provide contact information in the event you lose your computer.

Watch the video above to learn how to set it up, or just follow these steps:

    1. Open up System Preferences and click on Users & Groups.
    2. Click the lock at the bottom of the screen to make changes and enter your username and password when prompted.
    3. Click on Login options and set the Automatic Login drop down menu to "Off".
    4. Go back to the main system preferences page and click on Security & Privacy.
    5. Choose the General tab (if it isn't chosen already).
    6. Click the lock at the bottom of the screen to make changes and enter your username and password when prompted.
    7. Check the box next to "Show a message when the screen is locked" and enter any message you'd like.

That's it! Now when anyone sees the login screen they'll be able to see your custom message, complete with contact information if you wish.

  • 5 More Secret Features in OS X Lion

5 More Secret Features in OS X LionOS X Lion has been out for over a week now, and now that you've had a chance to try Lifehacker's 10 favorite secret features of the new operating system, here's five more to test out over the weekend.

    1. Reveal the Dock while using a fullscreen app

Lion's fullscreen apps sure are pretty, but they can slow you down by hiding many navigation elements of the operating system. If you want to reveal the dock while in full screen mode to quickly switch to a new program, TUAW reveals that you can simply rest on the bottom of the screen (or left or right side, if that's where you keep the Dock), then push it down as if you're trying to move beyond the edge of the monitor. It's not a natural movement, but the dock does come out of hiding as advertised.

    2. Put your contact info on the lock screen

Though it was possible to do this in Snow Leopard with third party apps, Lion now allows you to place a personal message with your contact information on the lock screen for any good samaritan that should stumble upon your lost laptop. To enable the feature, just go to your "Security & Privacy" preference pane, check the box labeled "Show a message when the screen is locked," and fill in your information.

    3. Move applications out of your Applications folder

Lion removed the ability to drag application files into a different folder, and instead only creates an alias for the program in the new folder while keeping the actual app package in the Applications folder. Luckily, Tested points out that you can still easily move applications to your heart's content by holding down the Command key as you drag.

    4. Use Quick Look in Stacks

Ever since the release OS X Leopard, Stacks and Quick Look have been great tools for quickly accessing and checking files without opening a new window. Unfortunately, OS X bafflingly omitted the ability to use Quick Look from within a Stack, forcing you to open a new finder window. No more. Just mouse over your file in any stack and hit the spacebar as you normally would to get a quick preview of its contents.

    5. Use the spacebar to zoom in on Mission Control thumbnails

If you keep a lot of windows open, it can be tough to see exactly what each one contains in Mission Control, especially on a tiny MacBook Air screen. Thankfully, Tested reveals that you can quickly zoom in on any window without exiting Mission Control by mousing over it and tapping the spacebar. Hit space again to shrink it back down.

These secrets will only get you started with unraveling Lion, so check out the rest of Lifehacker's coverage:

Make Your Keyboard Keys Repeat Properly When Held Down in Mac OS X LionAmong Mac OS X Lion's other fun/annoying iOS-like features is that when you hold down down a key, you're presented with alternatives. For example, holding down n will present you with ñ and ń—handy if you need to type in accents, annoying if you want it to send several keystrokes with a long press. You may really like this feature, but if you don't here's how you can turn it off.

Reader Nick discovered that in OS X Lion, some keys repeated and some did not. Sometimes letters repeat and sometimes they don't. Numbers never repeat. Punctuation and special characters always do. Clearly this is inconsistent, and you might find it frustrating. Fortunately, MacWorld found a solution. All you have to do is type this into the Terminal (found in Your Hard Drive —> Applications —> Utilities) and enter the following:

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

Press return and now your keys will repeat as normal. If you change your mind, just change "false" to "true" and you'll have things back the way Apple intended...this time.
