  • BetterTouchTool Adds Customizable Multitouch Gestures, Keyboard Shortcuts, and Window Snapping to OS X

In Gestures, Multitouch, Multitouch Gestures, Mac, Mac Os X, Os X, Downloads, Mac Downloads, Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, Macbooks, Trackpad, Touchpad, Laptops, Window Snapping, Aero Snap, Window Management, Keyboard Shortcuts, Shortcuts, Mice, / 24 February 2012 / 0 comments

BetterTouchTool Adds Customizable Multitouch Gestures, Keyboard Shortcuts, and Window Snapping to OS XOS X: BetterTouchTool adds over 60 new customizable multitouch gestures to your Mac, plus global keyboard shortcut management, Windows 7-like window snapping, and more.

We've mentioned BetterTouchTool before, but as reader SarcasmSiempre notes, it's come a long way in the past few years. BetterTouchTool's main purpose is to give you more control over the trackpad and Magic Mouse gestures on your Mac. Not only can you customize the ones you already have, but it ads a ton of new gesture possibilities, like different kinds of single- and multiple-fingered taps, swipes of all shapes and sizes, and support for up to eleven fingers. There are literally over 60 different gestures to which you can assign actions.

However, BetterTouchTool is also now a global keyboard shortcut manager, letting you remap hotkeys, assign them to built-in menu options, or assign them to BetterTouchTool functions. You can even remap the keys on your Apple Remote. And, lastly, BetterTouchTool also brings Windows 7-like window snapping and window switching to OS X. It isn't the only program that does so, but if you're already using it for gestures, it's nice to be able to get that functionality without another app in your menu bar. If you haven't checked it out in a while, I highly recommend giving it another look—especially if you're upset with the way OS X Lion changed all the multitouch gestures you were used to.

BetterTouchTool is (shockingly) a completely free app for OS X.

  • MagicPrefs Gives Your MacBook Trackpad (and other Multitouch Peripherals) Custom Multitouch Gestures

In Downloads, Mac Os X, Multitouch, Mouse, Input, Mac OS X Featured Download, Mac, Customization, Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, Macbooks, Trackpad, Touchpad, Laptops, Window Snapping, Aero Snap, Window Management, Keyboard Shortcuts, Shortcuts, Mice, / 24 June 2011 / 0 comments

MagicPrefs Gives Your MacBook Trackpad (and other Multitouch Peripherals) Custom Multitouch GesturesMac OS X-only: MagicPrefs lets you create custom gestures (and override existing ones) to provide new multitouch functionality to your Apple input devices. It's like the great Multiclutch, which serves a similar purpose, but with added power and precision that gives you serious control over even the nuances of your gestures.

You have five fingers and MagicPrefs recognizes that, letting you assign actions to taps and clicks based on the number of fingers present on the mouse. Additionally, it supports swiping, rotating, and pinching actions. You can make these actions do carry out tasks like zoom in and out of the screen, start Exposé or Dashboard, initiate Quicklook, and even run AppleScripts. If you find a gesture is too sensitive, or not sensitive enough, you can adjust that. You can even create presets for specific circumstances, so you can assign certain gestures for when you're working and others when you're gaming.

MagicPrefs gives you a lot room to fine-tune your customizations, and it's free to download.

  • Multitasktures Lets You Swipe Between Apps on Your Jailbroken iDevice

In Jailbreak, Ios, Iphone, Ipad, Ipod Touch, Downloads, User Interface, Gestures, Multitouch, Magic Trackpad, Macbooks, Trackpad, Touchpad, Laptops, Window Snapping, Aero Snap, Window Management, Keyboard Shortcuts, Shortcuts, Mice, / 13 April 2011 / 0 comments

Multitasktures Lets You Swipe Between Apps on Your Jailbroken iDevice Multitasktures is a really neat extension for your jailbroken iDevice that lets you swipe left and right, or use various other gestures, to navigate between open apps.

It's really easy to set up. Just search for Multitasktures on Cydia and install it. It relies on Activator to function, so if you already have that installed you probably have an idea how this works. Basically, it adds functionality to Activator so you can choose any action or gesture to navigate between apps. I prefer swiping left and right, but if you want you could double click the home button, use the volume buttons, pinch an icon, or choose any of the various options Activator provides. It's very neat.

To get it set up once you have Multitasktures installed, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Settings app on your iDevice and select "Activator" in the extensions section.
    2. Click the "Anywhere" option at the top.
    3. Choose the gesture or action you want from the long list of options.
    4. Choose "Left App (Multitaskture)" or "Right App (Multitaskture)" to assign one of Multitaskture's options. If you choose left, that action will move one app to the left. If you choose right, it'll move one app to the right

That's all there is to it. If you prefer a visual demonstration, just check out the video up top.

    Thanks for the tip, @m3hr!

  • Enable Your Laptop’s Pinch-to-Zoom Gestures in Firefox 4

In Multitouch, Firefox, Gestures, Touchpads, Laptops, Firefox 4, Macbook, Macbook Pro, Mouse, Magic Trackpad, Macbooks, Trackpad, Touchpad, Laptops, Window Snapping, Aero Snap, Window Management, Keyboard Shortcuts, Shortcuts, Mice, / 24 March 2011 / 0 comments

Enable Your Laptop's Pinch-to-Zoom Gestures in Firefox 4If you have a multitouch trackpad, you may be used to zooming in and out of web pages in your browser. Unfortunately, Firefox 4 disables them by default. Here's how to get them back.

To get back pinch in and out gestures for zooming, just type about:config in your address bar, promise Firefox you'll be careful, then type pinch in the search bar that comes up. Change the following values to match:

     browser.gesture.pinch.in cmd_fullZoomReduce browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift cmd_fullZoomReset browser.gesture.pinch.out cmd_fullZoomEnlarge browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift cmd_fullZoomReset

After that, you should see regular pinch-to-zoom functionality comem back to Firefox. I have only been able to test this on a MacBook; so if you other laptop users get it working on your multitouch-capable touchpad, let us know in the comments.

Update: Reader eingogol notes that you can also cycle through tabs with a twisting gesture by tweaking these settings in about:config:

     browser.gesture.twist.left Browser:PrevTab browser.gesture.twist.right Browser:NextTab
