  • Use a Banana Peel to Relieve Itching from Poison Ivy, Mosquito Bites, and More

In Clever Uses, Summer, Outdoors, Bugs, Mosquitos, Annoyances, Health, Skin, / 18 May 2012 / 0 comments

Use a Banana Peel to Relieve Itching from Poison Ivy, Mosquito Bites, and MoreAs we inch closer to summer, you're more likely to run into poison ivy, bug bites, and the other itchy ailments that come with being outside. Redditor xume points out that banana peels are a great homemade remedy for itchy skin.

If you get bitten by a mosquito or stumble into a bit of poison ivy/oak/sumac/whatever, rubbing a banana peel on the affected area can moisturize and neutralize some of the itching. Note that it will just alleviate some of the itching—it won't solve the root problem, like the oils that poison plants leave on your skin. It'll do great as a first step, but if you really want to knock out that rash, you should head to the store and grab some poison ivy soap (and save your banana peels for shoe shining and splinter removal instead).

Got any other great home remedies for itchiness? Let us know about them in the comments.

  • Turn Your Beverage Can Tab to Keep Wasps Out

In Outdoors, Parties, Soda, Beer, Mosquitos, Annoyances, Health, Skin, / 05 May 2012 / 0 comments

Turn Your Beverage Can Tab to Keep Wasps OutEver took a swig from a beer or soda can that a wasp had flown inside? Fortunately I haven't but I have a good friend who did once and got a very painful sting on the inside of his lip. Avoid this by turning your can's tab around so it can keep wasps and other large flying insects out of your drink.

Reddit user The_drowning_poop gives this tip. We've covered in the past how you can thread a straw through the can tab to keep it from rising which uses the same tab position and will also keep wasps and similarly-sized insects out of your drinks. Just watch out for ants and fruit flies attracted by the sugar.

Turn the can meal clip the other way to prevent wasps and other large insects to get in. | Reddit

  • Bag Gardens Help You Start Gardening Even if You Have Poor Soil

In Gardening, Outdoors, Garden Hacks, Beer, Mosquitos, Annoyances, Health, Skin, / 05 May 2012 / 0 comments

Bag Gardens Help You Start Gardening Even if You Have Poor SoilThe backyard garden is in vogue right now. If you'd like to grow a few veggies yourself but your backyard soil isn't conducive to keep anything other than crabgrass alive you can start your urban homesteading efforts with a bag garden. This will give you immediate results now and help build your soil for next year.

Homesteading magazine Mother Earth News offers a great way to establish a garden in an area with poor soil. Buy bags of potting soil and cut open the top side, leaving enough plastic on the sides to keep the bag together. You can plant many types of seeds directly in the 3-4 inches of potting soil and most will have plenty of room to grow to maturity, but I'd avoid carrots. Lettuces, spinach, and radishes will do very well.

If you place your garden beds in the area where you'd eventually like to have a permanent garden you'll build good soil by mixing the original potting soil with compost.

  • Repurpose a Five-Gallon Bucket Into a Child Swing

In Weekend Project, Parenting, Outdoors, Five Gallon Bucket, Mosquitos, Annoyances, Health, Skin, / 05 May 2012 / 0 comments

Repurpose a Five-Gallon Bucket Into a Child Swing If you have a backyard tree just begging for a swing you can easily make a small child swing out of a five-gallon bucket using a design from environmental weblog EcoProjecteer.

The only materials you'll need for the project are the bucket and a rope, but you'll also need a drill, a saw, sandpaper, and a permanent market. Mark and cut out two leg holes, drill holes for the rope, and mark and cut the sides of the bucket. Spend a few minutes sanding down any rough surfaces then take the swing outside and tie one of the rope to a sturdy tree branch, run it through the holes in the bucket, and tie the other end to the same tree branch.

Not only will this keep a bucket out of a landfill but since most child swings cost $25-50 you'll save some cash as well. This should work great for kids from around one year old until age three or four; by then they'll be ready to graduate to a tire swing.
