  • "People Aren’t Against You; They Are for Themselves"

In Quotables, Quotes, Thoughts, Thinking, Ideas, Psychology, / 29 May 2012 / 0 comments

"People Aren't Against You; They Are for Themselves"This adage surfaced on a Quora thread about simple statements that have changed people's lives for the better, and it's not unsurprising it rose to the top. It's easy to go through your life believing that there are people out to get you, but the reality is that their motivation rarely has anything to do with you. They just want what they want, and sometimes that may affect you negatively.

I think this is important. Even deliberate actions taken against you aren't necessarily against you. For example, an employer may fire you for being too good because s/he is threatened you'll take his/her job, but that's still a stupid action for the purpose of self preservation. It really doesn't have much to do with you. It can be easy to get upset with others who make choices that affect you negatively, and sometimes that's warranted, but ultimately they're just looking out for themselves. If you can remember that, it can be easier to let go of the little things and choose your battles wisely.

"Knowing How to Think Empowers You Far Beyond Those Who Know Only What to Think."This quotation from scientist and popular meme Neil deGrasse Tyson is practically our mission statement here at Lifehacker. It's easy enough to acquire information—especially in the age of the internet—but knowing how to think about what you learn creates the possibility for you to do so much more.

Are your thoughts empowering, or are the essentially someone else's?

"If You Don't Know It's Impossible, It's Easier to Do" You have no idea what you're doing. This is great, says author Neil Gaiman in a commencement speech at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Being unfamiliar with established rules and limits is a plus when you're trying to be creative and make things: "If you don't know it's impossible, it's easier to do."

"And because nobody's ever done it before, they haven't made up rules to stop anyone from doing that particular thing again."

Scrub to about the 1:50-mark for this nugget of advice, part of his 20-minute speech on all the things he wish he had known when he started out as a writer.

Two others worth remembering if you're a freelancer or artist:

    • Enjoy the ride, don't fret the whole way (the most important advice Gaiman ever got but never listened to, from Stephen King)
    • You get freelance work if your work is good, you're easy to get along with, and you're on deadline. Actually, you just need two out of those three to get paid as a freelancer.

  • Identify and hone your work that could become timeless

Identify and hone your work that could become timeless

No matter what your profession, it's easy to get caught up in the grind and lose sight of your work's legacy. Instapaper developer and blogger Marco Arment decided to renew his focus on work that would be relevant decades down the line.

My primary outputs, professionally, are software and writing. This is what I'm contributing to the world. None of the software I write today is likely to still be in use in thirty years, but if I write a truly great and timeless article, that could be valuable to people for much longer.

You don't have to be a blogger or developer to apply this advice to your own work. By considering which aspects of your professional output could impact the world years or decades down the road, you can find motivation to make those things truly great.
