  • Repurpose a Cork Bulletin Board Into a Thread Organizer

    In Sewing, Organization, Diy, Repurpose, / 27 May 2012 / 0 comments

Repurpose a Cork Bulletin Board Into a Thread OrganizerIf you sew you probably have an abundance of spools of thread. If you'd like to keep your various colors of thread not only handy but on display you can turn a standard cork bulletin board into a thread organizer by hammering toothpicks into the board at an angle.

DIY blogger Korrine Wojcik on her weblog DIY Projects came up with the idea after too many times digging around in her sewing box for the right thread. All you need to do is take a tape measure or ruler and a permanent marker and make dots where you plan on hammering in the toothpicks—the author started 3 inches below the border and made a dot every 2 inches. Then hammer a toothpick into each dot at a slight angle so the spools of thread won't fall off the mounted board. Mount the board to your wall and add the spools and you're finished.

If you only sew to repair a hole or replace a button this project may not be for you but if you sew at least every month or so you should find that it saves time finding thread and by being in plain sight it is a motivator to get started on your next project.

  • Build Your Own Vest Lined with Hidden Pockets with Bargain Thrift Store Finds

In Diy, Project, Sewing, Pockets, Hidden Pockets, Vest, Clothing, Saving Money, Thrifty, Thrift Store, / 18 May 2012 / 0 comments

Build Your Own Vest Lined with Hidden Pockets with Bargain Thrift Store Finds A good fleece vest can keep you warm on a chilly day, but thanks to Instructables user libraryCat, it can also be the ultimate storage device, complete with internal pockets to hold all of your gear. All you need is a fleece vest that fits, and a shirt you don't mind cutting up—both of which he found at his local thrift store.

Commercial products that do the same job (and admittedly are professionally made) can get kind of pricey, so it makes sense to try the DIY approach if you have the time and energy. libraryCat took a simple silver shirt and a black fleece vest, cut the shirt to fit inside the vest, and sewed it in as a new lining. With some of the excess fabric, he crafted an array of pockets and sleeves that he could use to hold his phone, sunglasses, even a bottle of water. He walks you through the process—and tells you how he created each pocket—at the link below, so hit that up for the details. You will need some sewing skills to make this work though.

It's a handy idea—especially if you like vests but wish they had a few more pockets—like a sleeve for your phone and place to stash your earbuds while you're out for a run. Oh, and we should mention—this is for fun, not for real spying, and make sure you empty those pockets when you go to the airport, okay? What do you think? How would you improve the design? Let us know in the comments.

  • DIY Storage Sofa

In Diy, Furniture, Storage, Sofa, Couch, Woodworking, Sewing, Saving Money, Thrifty, Thrift Store, / 28 April 2012 / 0 comments

DIY Storage SofaDIY and Household blogger Ana White's site shares an easy-to-construct DIY sofa that offers 2 large storage spaces beneath the seat. Normally DIY sofas are expensive due to buying upholstery foam, but this design uses a 3-inch thick camping mattress as the seat.

Full plans, photos, and step-by-step directions can be found at the source link below, but you'll need 6 yards of upholstery, 2.5 yards of burlap, pillow stuffing, 2 sheets of ¼" plywood, and around 8 boards in various sizes. Plan to spend around $100 plus the camping mattress which the author found for $30 but can vary widely. Twin bed mattress toppers would probably work fine as well.

You'll need basic woodworking and sewing skills, but the project doesn't require any fancy wood cuts or stitches so it should be easy to build for novices.

When you're finished you'll have a cozy, sturdy sofa that looks modern and has 2 storage compartments that measure 27" x 35" x 10" which is perfect to hold pillows and blankets to use the couch as a guest bed.

  • Repurpose a Beach Towel and Broomsticks Into a Beach Chair

In Repurpose, Weekend Project, Sewing, Diy, Beach, Woodworking, Sewing, Saving Money, Thrifty, Thrift Store, / 28 April 2012 / 0 comments

Repurpose a Beach Towel and Broomsticks Into a Beach ChairWhen spending time at the beach it's always nice to have a chair, but if you walk or drive to the beach carrying a big folding chair can be a hassle. Design firm Tovdesign came up with an open source design for a simple beach chair using two towels and broomstick-sized dowels.

The ‘Sand Chair' is made by cutting and sewing four pockets to hold dowels onto a beach towel, these pockets can be made from any sturdy fabric although most users will probably use a second identical beach towel. When you'd like to have a seat you'll just insert the dowels into the pockets, cross the front dowels and push them into the sand, then push the back dowels into the sand. See the source link below for additional photos and videos of the pockets and chair setup.

This chair won't be the most supportive in the world—your butt will probably rest on the sand itself, but it will prop your back up and raise your legs a little. But for the low cost and easy carry option it's much better than no chair at all and you can still use it for normal towel functions. Also since the sand chair takes up so little space it might be worth carrying if a friend comes along or you have a chair malfunction.
