  • Fix Out-of-Sync Audio in VLC with a Keyboard Shortcut

In Shortcut Of The Day, Annoyances, Videos, Vlc, Windows, Mac, Mac Os X, Os X, Linux, Shortcuts, Keyboard Shortcuts, Hotkeys, / 16 May 2012 / 0 comments

Fix Out-of-Sync Audio in VLC with a Keyboard ShortcutThere are few things more aggravating than trying to watch a video whose audio is about one second too slow. Here's a quick fix for the problem in VLC.

We've shown you how to do this by digging into VLC's preferences, but it turns out there are some very simple keyboard shortcuts to fix this problem. While you're watching the video, just press the J or K keys to move the audio back or forward 50 milliseconds, respectively. Quick, easy, and no advanced fiddling required.

Note that some people are reporting that Ctrl+K and Ctrl+L work, but this didn't work in my tests. J and K worked fine.

UndoClose Reopens Windows You've Accidentally Closed Sometimes we get a little trigger happy with our window-closing mouse clicks. UndoClose keeps track of the windows you close and lets you reopen them with a keyboard shortcut.

Just like reopening old browser tabs with Ctrl+Shift+T—one of our favorite keyboard shortcuts here at Lifehacker—UndoClose lets you reopen accidentally closed windows with any shortcut you want. In fact, UndoClose lets you set two different keyboard shortcuts: one for opening closed windows, and one for opening closed folders from Windows Explorer. It's great to have the distinction if you use Windows Explorer a lot.

The program's only downside is that it can't reopen windows from a multi-window app; it can only reopen windows from programs you've closed completely. So, if you accidentally close an IM window from Pidgin, but still have your buddy list open, UndoClose can't reopen that IM window—it'll just focus your buddy list, because it can't distinguish between closed windows and closed apps. Still, it's pretty handy for most apps, especially Windows Explorer. Check out the video above to see a demonstration, or hit the link below to check it out.

UndoClose is a free download for Windows only.

  • Hold the Finder’s Back Button to See Your Recent Folders

Hold the Finder's Back Button to See Your Recent FoldersJust like you can hold down the back button in Safari, Firefox, or Chrome, holding down the Finder's back button in Lion shows you where you've recently been.

This only works in Lion, unfortunately, but it's a really useful shortcut if you want to go back two or three folders instead of just one. It isn't a mind-blowing feature that's going to make the Finder any less bare, but it's one we didn't know about and can come in pretty handy.

  • Bypass the Clipboard by Dragging Text to the OS X Dock or App Switcher

In Shortcut Of The Day, Clipboard, Text, Shortcuts, Mac Os X, Mac, Video, Clips, Lifehacker Video, Clips, Keyboard Shortcuts, Hotkeys, / 18 November 2011 / 0 comments

Bypass the Clipboard by Dragging Text to the OS X Dock or App Switcher If you want to save the contents of the Mac OS X clipboard, or just don't want to bother with it at all, you don't have to. You can just drag text (or, presumably, any other media) from one app to another using the dock or even the app switcher.

As you can see above, dragging a link out of TextEdit and onto Firefox's icon results in Firefox loading the page automatically. This is a bit quicker than copying and pasting the link. You can also drag text from a web site onto TextEdit's icon and it'll create a new document with that text. The same should go for any other kind of media, letting you transport it around as you please without the aid of the clipboard. Just use the dock or bring up OS X's app switcher (Command+Tab) and drag away.
