Keep an emergency $20 in your phone case

The merits of smartphone cases are a subject of debate, but if you do use one, consider storing an emergency $20 bill between the cover and the phone.

As Reddit user Lunkavitch points out, the money could come in handy to pay a cab or lunch bill if your wallet gets stolen, or if you just forgot it at home. It may seem a little paranoid, but it's a small insurance policy that could get you out of a jam if your wallet goes missing.

  • Build a Smartphone Projector for Around a Dollar

In Diy, Projectors, Iphone, Smartphone, Clever Uses, Stolen, / 30 November 2011 / 0 comments

Build a Smartphone Projector for Around a DollarProjectors can be expensive, but if you're looking to build one for your smartphone without spending a lot of cash, Instructables user iamaledgend put one together for under a dollar.

Using a magnifying glass, a shoebox, tape, and LEGOs, you can set your phone inside the box, seal it up, and watch as it's displayed on your wall. The image flips when it goes through the magnifying glass, so you'll need to make sure you lock the rotation on your phone if it has an accelerometer. It won't work for movies with subtitles, as the words will be flipped backwards and you're not going to get the same high quality image you get with a store bought projector, but it's cheap alternative for those looking to watch a few movies.

  • Most Popular Recipe Organization Tool: Evernote

In Hive Five Followup, Cooking, Recipes, Organizers, Mobile, Ingredients, Smartphone, Tablets, Ios, Android, Paprika, Evernote, Dropbox, Springpad, Google Docs, Google, Keeprecipes, Yummysoup, Hive Five, In Brief, / 29 November 2011 / 0 comments

Most Popular Recipe Organization Tool: Evernote Keeping your recipes organized can be a daunting task, especially if you have hand-me-down index cards passed down by family or scrawled out by friends scrawled out on slips of paper. Last week, we asked you how you organize your recipes, make them available on multiple devices and in multiple places, and get at them when you're in the kitchen cooking. You responded, and we took a look at the top five. Now we're back to highlight the winner.

Evernote took the top spot with 46.5% of the votes cast. In second place was Springpad with over 18%, and a great recipe manager built-in to the app. In third place with just over 12% of the vote was Google Docs, which a number of you said you use to keep everything organized into recipe collections and accessible on any device. Paprika, the only actual recipe management app to make the top five, came in fourth place with 11.7% of the votes cast, and Dropbox came in a close fifth with 11.7% of the overall vote.

  • Best Recipe Organization App?

In Hive Five Call For Contenders, Cooking, Apps, Recipes, Organizers, Mobile, Ingredients, Smartphone, Tablets, Ios, Android, Hive Five, Dropbox, Springpad, Google Docs, Google, Keeprecipes, Yummysoup, Hive Five, In Brief, / 23 November 2011 / 0 comments

Best Recipe Organization App? When you need a place to collect and organize all of your family's old recipes in digital form, and then take those recipes with you to the grocery store or to your parents' house to help with Thanksgiving dinner, which application do you use to get the job done? This week we want to know which apps you have loaded up on your smartphone or tablet to collect, organize, share, or just store your favorite recipes for safe keeping.

There's something to be said for pen and paper and cookbooks covered in hand-written substitutions and notes that have been passed down for generations, but there's an growing number of applications designed for the smartphone or tablet you may already have in your kitchen that can help you organize your recipes, make a shopping list out of ingredients for dishes you plan to make, and even walk you through the preparation of some dishes, step by step. This week we want to know which one you trust when it's time to go shopping or start cooking. Leave your vote in the comments below.

The call for contenders is closed. To see which of your nominees made the top five, head over to The Five Best Recipe Organization Tools and vote for the winner!

Hive Five nominations take place in the comments, where you post your favorite tool for the job. We get hundreds of comments, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your comment like so: VOTE: BEST RECIPE ORGANIZATION APP. Please don't include your vote in a reply to another commenter. Instead, make your vote and reply separate comments. If you don't follow this format, we may not count your vote. To prevent tampering with the results, votes from first-time commenters may not be counted. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition.

About the Hive Five: The Hive Five feature series asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get: "Which tool is the best?" Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favorite tools to get the job done. Every weekend, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last week's five best online file storage and syncing tools.
