  • Google+ Now Lets You Decide Who Can Notify You of New Posts

In Updates, Google+, Google, Social Networking, Notifications, Social, / 07 October 2011 / 0 comments

Google+ Now Lets You Decide Who Can Notify You of New PostsIf you're getting overloaded with Google+ notifications, you can now tweak who's allowed to notify you in its settings.

Just head to your Google+ Settings page to tweak this preference. You'll see it under "Who can interact with you and your posts". Just change the "Who can send you notifications" preference to fit whatever group of people you want—it can be "anyone", a specific circle or group of circles, or individuals. Google's rolling this feature out slowly, so if you don't see it right now, check back soon to enable it. Hit the link to read more.

  • Google+ 2.0 Leaks with a Prettier, More Intuitive Interface

In Android Downloads, Google+, Social, Social Networking, Android, Downloads, Google, / 07 October 2011 / 0 comments

Google+ 2.0 Leaks with a Prettier, More Intuitive InterfaceAndroid: The Ice Cream Sandwich version of Google+ leaked onto the web today, so you can grab it right now and check out some of its neat interface changes.

The update isn't a huge overhaul, but it does make some nice changes that make the app easier to use. The notification bar has been turned into a smaller button on the front page, the Circles page looks a lot better and adds some nice thumbnails, and Messages are now called "Chords". You'll also notice that many of the buttons have been replaced with menus along the top that look just like the menus in Google's upcoming Music app, which was also leaked today. Again, overall, it isn't a major redesign, but it does look a bit nicer.

Google+ 2.0 is a free download for Android devices.

  • Facebook Now Translates Posts and Comments Not In Your Native Language

In Updates, Facebook, Translation, Translate, Language, Social, Social Networking, / 07 October 2011 / 0 comments

Facebook Now Translates Posts and Comments Not In Your Native LanguageFacebook has quietly launched a new feature that lets you translate posts and comments on Facebook pages with the click of a button.

When you see a comment in another language, you should also see a small "Translate" link next to the "Like" and "Share" links. Clicking this will immediately use Bing to translate that post into your native language. You can then hit the link again to change it back. It doesn't work on every comment on the site yet, but it works on many of the non-English comments I tried.

Right now, the feature only works on Facebook pages—not profiles—but chances are, you're more likely to run into comments that need translating on other pages, where you don't know anyone, too. The feature is expected to roll out to Facebook profiles eventually.

  • Everything You Need to Know About the New Features Coming to Facebook

In Facebook, Social, Social Networking, News, Updates, Social, Social Networking, / 22 September 2011 / 0 comments

Everything You Need to Know About the New Features Coming to FacebookFacebook announced its plans for the future at their F8 developer conference, adding a bunch of new features to improve the way you interact with others on the site. Love it or hate it, here's what to expect.

    The Timeline

Everything You Need to Know About the New Features Coming to FacebookYet another redesign is coming to Facebook, but this one looks pretty good. The Timeline seeks to take all the news and status updates flowing through your account and organize them in a way that's actually meaningful to you. It hides what you don't necessarily care about while still making it accessible—just collapsed (into a gray dot)—on the page. How Facebook decides what is and is not important isn't entirely clear, however, but seems like it learns your preferences based on what you choose to hide and show.

You also get to choose what you want to highlight on your specific timeline. If something is important, you can decide how prominent it is. For example, a photo header at the top of the page allows you to feature a specific image that's basically a photographic version of your status. You'll still have your profile picture, but you can headline your page with a great big picture of what's important to you right now. You can also choose what other images, status updates, etc., are featured on your page so you can highlight the content you want and hide what you don't.

Your timeline will also include app summaries, featuring the things that you do. If you're pulling recipes from a cooking app, tracking your routes while running, or just buying tickets to a movie, a summary of that activity will be available on your timeline (unless you choose not to feature it). This is to provide an overview of what you're doing, rather than scatter tons and tons of individual updates across your timeline. Instead, summaries will show what you did in a given week or month (for example). This way you can share what you've been up to without a massive amount of information becoming overwhelming for visitors of your page.

Timeline enters its beta period today and will be available to developers. Everyone else will be able to sign up to try it out early at some point, but it will be rolled out progressively over time. If you just can't wait, you can skip the line by pretending to be a developer.

Better Handling of News and Updates

    Express Yourself with Verbs

Facebook is exceptionally proud of adding verbs. Instead of just liking stuff, you can now ______ stuff. If you just watch a movie, listen to a song, or eat a sandwich, you'll be able to specify that on your page. This way you don't have to feel like you're endorsing something.

Keeping Annoyances Out of Your Way

Everything You Need to Know About the New Features Coming to FacebookFacebook focused on three things to keep out the annoyances: frictionless experiences, real-time serendipity, and finding patterns. So what does all of that actually mean? Facebook is trying to get rid of annoying popups from apps every time you want to just share some minor information. They want to reduce the friction of sharing what you want to share. Facebook also feels their new ticker—you know, the thing we showed you how to kill—is a great place to put a lot of these small updates. It'll handle friends' status, breaking news, and little things you may not want to see on your page. Finally, Facebook will be watching for activity patterns to more intelligently highlight what's happening with your friends. Any patterns it finds will show up more prominently on your page so you don't miss potentially important things that are happening.

    Social App Integrations

Everything You Need to Know About the New Features Coming to FacebookFacebook has been working with many online services to bring a social aspects to practically everything using their Open Graph. For example, Spotify has an app that'll let you listen to music with friends and share your preferences easily on Facebook with the idea that you and your friends can discover lots of new music together. Netflix is also providing a means of sharing what you're watching. Facebook will notice activity patterns in your friends—like if a fair number of them are watching the same film—so you'll hear about new movies if your friends are all checking them out. Games and other apps are also integrating in more social ways so what you do online becomes more of a cooperative, rather than solo, experience.

All of the social apps demoed in the F8 keynote today—meaning Netflix, Spotify, and some games—will be available today.
