  • Order a Pour-Over to Get Fresh, Properly Brewed Coffee at Starbucks

In Coffee, Starbucks, Coffee Hacks, Drinks, Food Hacks, Secret Menu, Pour-over, Pour-over Coffee, / 13 April 2012 / 0 comments

Order a Pour-Over to Get Fresh, Properly Brewed Coffee at Starbucks Love or hate Starbucks (and most of you probably hate Starbucks), you can't argue that the coffee chain is ubiquitous. If you want a tasty cup and your best available (or preferred) option is a Starbucks, head in and ask for a pour over to get a freshly ground and brewed cup of coffee as opposed to whatever's been sitting in the hot pot since the morning rush.

Daniel, over at Danielmiessler.com, writes that the result of this trick is a custom-brewed, poured-over cup of coffee with the right ratio of water to freshly ground beans. It takes a bit longer, so definitely order straight drip if you're in a hurry, but once you're drinking that poured over cup you'll wonder where this tip has been your whole life. If you're looking for more in-store Starbucks hacks, we've got you covered there, too. Alternatively, if you just can't bring yourself to go to Starbucks at all, you don't have to go to Starbucks to get a decent pour over—we've shown you how to do it at home. What do you think? Willing to give it a shot, or do you avoid Starbucks entirely? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Save Money and Get a Better Drink with the Secret Short Cappuccino at Starbucks

In Coffee, Starbucks, Cappuccino, Saving Money, Food Hacks, Secret Menu, Pour-over, Pour-over Coffee, / 11 February 2012 / 0 comments

Save Money and Get a Better Drink with the Secret Short Cappuccino at StarbucksAccording to news weblog Slate, Starbucks can serve you a better, stronger cappuccino that costs less money; the baristas all know about it, but it's not on any menu. We're talking about the Starbucks short cappuccino, and if you're going to visit the Seattle-based coffee megacorporation you may want to give it a try.

In Europe and in barista competitions a cappuccino is defined as a 4-6 oz beverage but the smallest cappuccino on the menu at Starbucks is the 12 oz "Tall". The 8oz "short" cappuccino from Starbucks is 8 oz but has the same amount of espresso as the tall, meaning that your coffee to milk ratio is much higher. The reason why smaller cappuccinos are regarded as superior is that most coffee experts maintain that it is impossible to properly froth the microfoam in larger quantities. Slate states that

a 20-ounce cappuccino is any oxymoron...I can confirm that [the short cappuccino] is a better drink than the buckets of warm milk—topped with a veneer of froth—that the coffee chain advertises on its menus.

Why is the short cappuccino not on the menu? Starbucks, like most retail coffeeshops, must maintain a fine line with pricing; if the price is too high you drive customers away, but if you price it too low the margins don't allow sufficient profit. Keeping the short off the menus raises the bar for the minimum drink size to tall which keeps the jump from the smallest beverage to the largest only around a dollar in price difference.

So if you just want more coffee in your cappuccino or prefer to spend as little as possible at Starbucks there are a few reasons to give the short cappuccino a try. Photo by Marco Arment

  • Get Better White Balance for Your Photos with a Starbucks Coffee Lid

In Clever Uses, Photography, Coffee, Starbucks, Color, Photo Hacks, Camera Hacks, Dslr, Camera, / 19 May 2011 / 0 comments

Get Better White Balance for Your Photos with a Starbucks Coffee LidGetting accurate white balance can be tough, especially when you have mixed light pouring into a scene. If you don't have professional white balance filter (like the Expodisc), you can still do pretty well with a regular old Starbucks coffee lid.

Photographer Steve Bennet discovered the lid—while not flawless—performed remarkably well as a white balancing tool. How does it work? Much like a proper white balance filter:

To use, I set the focus to infinity, place the [coffee lid] over, then set the custom WB. I dont even need to hold it as it fits nicely inside my lens hood, but that is just a lucky coincidence.

Some argue a bleached coffee filter is better, but that may be harder to come by in a pinch. The nice thing about Starbucks coffee lids is that they're always right down the street.

Access Paywall-Free Content on Starbucks Wi-Fi NetworksThere's been a lot of talk about hacking around paywalls recently, but if you're looking to read paid publications like The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, or ESPN online, you don't have to do any hacking—just head to your nearest Starbucks. Starbucks started offering free versions of paid content back in the fall, but is still expanding their library. Right now you can access the Wall Street Journal, The Economist, ESPN Insider, Mediabistro, and in April, Marvel Digital Comics, all from your laptop or tablet connected to one of Starbucks' free Wi-Fi networks. If you're already grabbing a cup of joe in the morning, you might as well sit down and enjoy some paywall-free content. Hit the link to read the full press release.
