  • Stick Some Extension Cables to the Back of Your iMac and Avoid Feeling Around for USB Ports

In Diy, Clever Uses, Sugru, Imac, Mac, Hardware, Usb, Annoyances, Cables, Clips, / 12 April 2012 / 0 comments

Stick Some Extension Cables to the Back of Your iMac and Avoid Feeling Around for USB Ports iMac users have forever struggled with the desktop's annoying USB ports, always having to reach around the computer and feel for a USB port just to plug in a flash drive. The guys at Sugru have a solution: just tape (or Sugru) some extension cables to your iMac to "add" ports onto the front of your screen.

Look, I get it. The iMac is beautiful. Its USB ports are in the back for a reason, and sticking some ugly, exposed cables to the side are only going to ruin Apple's brilliant design philosophy. However, the iMac's ports are so annoying that I think it's completely worth the downgrade in asthetics. If you really wanted to be clever, you could probably position the extension cords so that the ports were sticking out the side of your monitor and thus invisible from the front, but still easily accessible. Either way, the choice is up to you—but as someone who's had to use an iMac for more than a day, I'd do this in a heartbeat. Check out the video above to see what this trick looks like in action.

And, of course, if you're sick of hearing about all the awesome things Sugru can do and don't want to buy more, you could probably accomplish the same thing with a bit of masking tape.

  • Make DIY Prescription Swimming Goggles with Sugru

In Sugru, Diy, Swimming, Imac, Mac, Hardware, Usb, Annoyances, Cables, Clips, / 24 March 2012 / 0 comments

Make DIY Prescription Swimming Goggles with SugruPrescription swimming goggles can be pretty expensive. If you have a spare pair of your regular prescription you can add them to a standard pair of swimming goggles with a packet of Sugru, the hacker-friendly curable adhesive.

Instructables user and Sugru creator projectsugru shares this method of creating DIY prescription goggles: remove the lenses from a set of spare glasses, open the packet of Sugru and knead it into two equal-sized sausage shaped pieces, place the Sugru "sausage" around the rim of the goggles, and firmly press the lenses into the Sugru.

Make sure there are no gaps between the Sugru and the goggles/lenses and allow the goggles to cure for a few hours before using.

  • Make Your Own Handles for Micro Screwdrivers

In Diy, Screwdrivers, Screws, Diy Creations, Sugru, Hardware, Usb, Annoyances, Cables, Clips, / 18 November 2011 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Handles for Micro ScrewdriversIf you have a set of cheap micro screwdrivers, chances are you've run into the problem of not being able to get enough torque to unscrew anything, especially in an older electronic device. Instructables user tranvi007 had the same problem, so they came up with a simple process to make a handle.

While your best bet is probably buying micro screwdrivers with better handles, the method here at least lets you put all those old screwdrivers to use. It uses Oogoo (a DIY Sugru mixture) to cast a small handle for those tiny metal screwdrivers everyone seems to loathe. The handle provides a significantly better grip and should make it easier to use. It certainly beats out using pliers or latex gloves. Find the full guide over on Instructables.

  • Repair Even the Most Damaged of Earbuds with Sugru

In Diy, Headphones, Repairs, Sugru, Saving Money, Hardware, Usb, Annoyances, Cables, Clips, / 03 November 2011 / 0 comments

Repair Even the Most Damaged of Earbuds with SugruSugru, the moldable silicone that can repair cables and clean up rusty faucet grips, has found itself another niche as earbud reviver. DIYer Spode writes about how he fixed an almost-dead pair of earbuds with a bit of know-how and some Sugru.

While you could just buy a new pair of earbuds, Spode wasn't about to let his $300+ Shures just rot in a garbage can without an attempt to fix them. So, when the right earbud became finicky, he took them apart, re-soldered the wires together, and created an entirely new casing for each earbud with the moldable silicone. It's a bit more than just your mold-and-fix job, but for reviving a pair of expensive headphones, it's definitely worth the work. Hit the link to see how it was done.
