  • Cosmos Is an All-In-One Optimization Tool for Your Android Phone

In Android Downloads, Downloads, Android, Utilities, Battery, Battery Management, Privacy, Permissions, Cache, / 16 May 2012 / 0 comments

Cosmos Is an All-In-One Optimization Tool for Your Android Phone We've discussed how to speed up and refresh your Android phone before, but at the end of the day there's only so much you can do at one time to give your device a boost. Cosmos, a new app from the team at Support.com, aims to change that. Cosmos rolls privacy protection, battery management, and junk file removal all into one easy to use tool that promises to keep your phone safe, snappy, and responsive.

Cosmos doesn't do anything that other apps don't already do, but what makes it interesting is that it rolls the features of three or four other utilities into one free app that's easy to use. If your battery keeps dying before you can recharge your phone, Cosmos' battery optimizer will monitor your power consumption, show it to you as the day progresses, and offer one-touch management settings designed to help you squeeze as much life as possible out of your battery before you have to plug your phone in. The privacy scanner will look at all of your installed apps and report back to you what permissions each app requires and whether it seems out of the ordinary, and the trash cleaner automatically cleans out orphaned application files by uninstalled apps, clears your browser history, and can even wipe out your call log and application caches to free up space and keep your phone running smoothly.

The big draw of the tool is obviously the power management, which we think is already well covered (and then some) by our favorite tool for the job, JuiceDefender, but Cosmos is free and includes features you'd have to install other apps to get, so it's worth a look. What do you think? Have you tried Cosmos? Do you prefer one app that does it all, or multiple apps that do individual things better? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

  • Add a Right-Click Option to Count Characters, Words, and Paragraphs in Any Mac Program

In Automator, Mac Tips, Mac Os X, Utilities, Applescript, Scripts, Mac, Permissions, Cache, / 04 May 2012 / 0 comments

Add a Right-Click Option to Count Characters, Words, and Paragraphs in Any Mac ProgramWant a simple way to count characters, words, and paragraphs in any Mac program? Mac OS X Hints shares an Automator script that adds a right-click option to selected text so you can get a word count in any program you want.

Word counts can be helpful in a variety of situations, especially in emails where you want to keep them down to a minimum most of the time. The Applescript that Automator runs will add the option to count characters when you select a block of text and right-click it. You can download a precompiled version over on Mac OS X Hints, but it renders the menu option in French for some reason. To fix this, follow the directions over on Mac OS X Hints, but use commenter Newscientist's version of the code to correct the language. It's a handy little extra to add into OS X so you can get a quick word count anywhere.

  • WinPlusX Gives You Super Quick Access to Windows’ More Hidden, Advanced Programs

In Shortcuts, Utilities, Windows, Windows Downloads, Windows 8, Keyboard Shortcuts, Registry, Start Menu, Downloads, / 11 April 2012 / 0 comments

WinPlusX Gives You Super Quick Access to Windows' More Hidden, Advanced ProgramsWindows only: If you're a Windows tweak addict, you probably use tools like the Registry, Computer Management, Disk Management, and Power Options often—apps that are extremely useful, but don't always have obvious or quick shortcuts in the Start Menu. WinPlusX puts them one keyboard shortcut away.

WinplusX is actually a clone of a cool Windows 8 feature, which gives power users quicker access to the tools they love but aren't very prominent in Windows' menus—especially not the Metro menus. It's simple, portable, and gives you access to lots of advanced Windows utilities in one keystroke. You can either press Win+X to access the menu (a shortcut previously used for the Mobility Center), or right-click on the Start Menu to bring it up. You can also add or remove any shortcuts you want to the list, which makes it all the more powerful. It can be a little buggy at times, but for how simple its functionality is, it can still do the job just fine.

Of course, you can always access these things from the Start menu's search box. However, if you're a bit more mouse-oriented, this is a bit quicker and easier.

WinPlusX is a free download for Windows XP and up. If you're on Windows 7 and want something a tad different, you can also check out these registry tweaks that will put the Win+X menu in your desktop context menu.
