  • Fix Out-of-Sync Audio in VLC with a Keyboard Shortcut

In Shortcut Of The Day, Annoyances, Videos, Vlc, Windows, Mac, Mac Os X, Os X, Linux, Shortcuts, Keyboard Shortcuts, Hotkeys, / 16 May 2012 / 0 comments

Fix Out-of-Sync Audio in VLC with a Keyboard ShortcutThere are few things more aggravating than trying to watch a video whose audio is about one second too slow. Here's a quick fix for the problem in VLC.

We've shown you how to do this by digging into VLC's preferences, but it turns out there are some very simple keyboard shortcuts to fix this problem. While you're watching the video, just press the J or K keys to move the audio back or forward 50 milliseconds, respectively. Quick, easy, and no advanced fiddling required.

Note that some people are reporting that Ctrl+K and Ctrl+L work, but this didn't work in my tests. J and K worked fine.

  • Group Videos in iTunes by Saving Them as TV Shows

In Videos, Itunes, Movies, Organization, Tv Shows, Mac, Mac Os X, Os X, Linux, Shortcuts, Keyboard Shortcuts, Hotkeys, / 16 May 2012 / 0 comments

Group Videos in iTunes by Saving Them as TV ShowsWant to add more organization to your collection of videos in iTunes? Categorize the videos as TV Shows instead of Movies and then you can group them as you wish (home videos, YouTube videos, etc.). Mac OS X Hints describes the easy steps for organizing your video library.

When you import a new movie into iTunes, it will usually be categorized as a movie. Select all the videos you want to set as a TV show and go to the Info settings (Command + I). Under the Options tab, change the Media Kind to TV Show.

Then, under the Sorting tab, put the group name you want to add the video to under the Show field (e.g., family videos). Correct the name tag if you want as well.

Once you're done, view your "TV Shows" in the icon view, where all the videos will be grouped under their own icons. Even in the album list view, the videos will be grouped by your categories.

Mac OS X Hints readers suggest other ways to group videos in iTunes, such as using the Groupings tag which will show up in the column view in Movies (or other type) or to create custom genres for the video files and then display by Genre. The TV show hack, though, retains the grouping in more types of views and it also will stay organized by group on an Apple TV.

  • ProxTube Unblocks US-Only YouTube Videos for International Users

In Youtube, Videos, Streaming Video, International, Proxy, Firefox, Firefox Extensions, Extensions, Linux, Shortcuts, Keyboard Shortcuts, Hotkeys, / 10 May 2012 / 0 comments

ProxTube Unblocks US-Only YouTube Videos for International UsersChrome/Firefox: Non-US users know the pain of having services blocked from them pretty well, and YouTube is no exception. If you're tired of stumbling on videos you can't watch, ProxTube will fix the problem by unblocking all US-only videos for anyone to see.

ProxTube is essentially an extension that automatically routes your YouTube traffic through a proxy server in the US, so YouTube thinks you're visiting the site from a US location. It's not unlike our method of watching the BBC player from another country, it just automates the process for you. Just install it and start browsing YouTube.

All of us Lifehacker editors are US-based, so we couldn't give this a vigorous testing, but it seems to have a pretty big following. If you give it a shot, let us know how it works for you in the comments.

  • How to Fix All of Your Biggest YouTube Annoyances: Hide Comments, Turn Off Autoplay, and More

In Youtube, Annoyances, Extensions, Chrome, Google Chrome, Firefox, Downloads, Chrome Downloads, Videos, Streaming Video, Keyboard Shortcuts, Hotkeys, / 01 May 2012 / 0 comments

How to Fix All of Your Biggest YouTube Annoyances: Hide Comments, Turn Off Autoplay, and MoreYou probably use YouTube every single day, but it's not something you think about tweaking the way you do, say, Gmail. Yet YouTube is filled with annoyances, like obnoxious autoplay, intrusive ads, and mind-numbingly stupid comments (to name a few). Here's how to make YouTube more bearable.

Chrome: Tweak Every Corner of YouTube with the YouTube Options Extension

How to Fix All of Your Biggest YouTube Annoyances: Hide Comments, Turn Off Autoplay, and MoreChrome users are lucky: You have one amazing extension that fixes all of YouTube's annoyances and then some. It's called YouTube Options for Google Chrome, and it can do all of the following things with just a few checkboxes:

    • Set the size and/or quality of every video you visit. The viewing size will actually make the video take up more space on the page without going full screen, while the viewing quality will only adjust the resolution each video plays in.
    • Hide ads and annotations
    • Disable auto-play, though you can enable autoplay for playlist videos if you so desire
    • Automatically replay videos when finished (perfect for 10 hour long Nyan Cat sessions)
    • Hide the header, headline, video description, comments, video suggestions, footer, and playlist sections of the window. This is great for cleaning out the things you don't like looking at. You can also automatically expand the video description instead of hiding it, which works great in conjunction with the "hide comments" feature.
    • Darken the background of your videos
    • Download videos to your hard drive
    • Much more

And if that weren't enough, a lot of these features also work on other video sites, like Vimeo, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Hulu, and lots more. We've actually mentioned it before, and it's still the simplest yet most powerful YouTube tweaker out there, and it'll single-handedly rid it of all its worst annoyances. If you're using Chrome, you need this extension.

Firefox, Chrome, and All Other Browsers: Get Rid of Annoyances with the Extensions You Already Have

If you don't have Chrome, you're unfortunately not quite as lucky. Most user scripts and Firefox extensions built for these purposes have become obsolete, and are no longer being updated. However, you can still get rid of YouTube's annoyances with some of the extensions you probably already have. Here's what you can do.

Hide Annoying Comments: If you're sick of YouTube comments, you have two choices: use something like YouTube Comment Snob to try and filter out the comments you don't like, or block the comment section altogether with AdBlock Plus. Both options work fairly well.

How to Fix All of Your Biggest YouTube Annoyances: Hide Comments, Turn Off Autoplay, and MoreStop YouTube from Autoplaying: The only reliable method I've found for stopping autoplay is to just use the Flashblock extension for your particular browser. This will keep all videos from playing until you click on them. Unfortunately, Flashblock blocks all Flash, not just YouTube—and while you can whitelist certain sites, there's no way to allow Flash on all sites except YouTube. So, it isn't a perfect solution, but it'll get the job done, and probably fix annoyances on other Flash-based sites too.

Block In-Video Ads: The best way to block YouTube ads is to use the previously mentioned AdBlock Video extension for Firefox. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep up very well with Firefox's rapid release schedule, so it doesn't currently work with the Aurora or Beta channels—just the stable one. If you're on Aurora (or you use a browser other than Firefox), you'll have to resort to AdBlock Plus, which doesn't work quite as well—you'll still have to sit through a blank screen for a few seconds before some videos—but it'll block the other popup ads just fine.

Automatically Play Videos in HD: Unfortunately, there isn't currently a user script or good Firefox extension to manually set the quality for your videos, but there is the YouTube High Definition extension, which will automatically play each video at the highest possible resolution. This is annoying if you'd rather play at 720p than 1080p, but it's either that or you manually set it yourself, unfortunately.

Do Them All At Once With YouTube Center: Many of you have mentioned the YouTube Center Greasemonkey script in the comments, and it's a great way to do all of the above with one quick installation. Unfortunately, since it's a user script, it doesn't let you customize which settings you use and which ones you don't, but if you know you want them all, you should use this script. If you want to pick and choose, the above options should still work just fine. Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

Update: Reader Aarrrgh also shared this user script, which adds the ability to pick and choose your options. Thanks, Aarrrgh!

Obviously, there are a ton of different YouTube tweakers out there, and we can't possibly mention them all. But, if you have any of your own favorite tips, scripts, or extensions for dealing with YouTube's annoyances? Be sure to share them with us in the comments below.
