  • The HuMn Wallet Is an RFID-Blocking Wallet That Won’t Look Like a Lump in Your Pocket

In Stuff We Like, Wallets, Rfid, Security, Safety, Privacy, Identity Theft, / 02 March 2012 / 0 comments

The HuMn Wallet Is an RFID-Blocking Wallet That Won't Look Like a Lump in Your PocketRFIDs are showing up in everything from your cards to your passports, offering easy identification but also a greater chance of identity theft. Although plenty of RFID-blocking wallets exist, none are quite as thin and pocketable as the HuMn.

The HuMn wallet is essentially a plate with a band to keep your cash and cards in a small space, but in addition to its minimal carrying functions it also blocks any RFID skimming. They start you off with two plates, but you can add on more if you want at any time.

Currently the HuMn wallet is available on a more-than-funded Kickstarter project that's basically now a pre-order page. You'll probably have to wait a little while to get yours, but a modest investment will get you one of these thin and protective cash carriers as soon as they're ready.

UPDATE: Apparently there's already a wallet just like this, and it's called the William Wallet made by Wintercheck Factory. If you're looking for an option you can buy now (and seems to have thought of this idea first), check them out.

  • Keep Photos in Your Wallet to Increase the Likelihood It Will Be Returned if Lost

In Security, Lost Wallet, Wallets, Recovery, Tips, Privacy, Identity Theft, / 12 August 2011 / 0 comments

Keep Photos in Your Wallet to Increase the Likelihood It Will Be Returned if LostLosing your wallet can be devastating because it doesn't just mean lost money, but rather several cards that will take many hours to replace. Plus, if it results in identity theft you could be paying for that one little error for several years. According to personal finance magazine SmartMoney, you can improve your chances of getting your lost wallet returned by simply including a photo:

According to a 2009 study by psychologists in Edinburgh, Scotland, a lost wallet is far more likely to be returned if it has a picture or two inside. The return rates were highest (88 percent) for wallets that included a baby photo. (Just about one in two wallets with a pic of a puppy were returned.) Those without kids, though, need not worry. Says Richard Wiseman, the author of the Edinburgh study: Get a photo of the "cutest baby you can find" and make sure it's prominently displayed.

We've heard about this idea before, but if you've recently slimmed down your wallet this is something you might want to consider keeping in it. Or, you know, just putting in it if you're without kids and puppies. Just do a quick google image search and hook up your printer. Problem solved.

  • Why Your Fat Wallet Is Causing You to Spend More (and What to Do About It)

In Personal Finance, Overspending, Spending Money, Saving Money, Wallets, Privacy, Identity Theft, / 11 August 2011 / 0 comments

Why Your Fat Wallet Is Causing You to Spend More (and What to Do About It)A wallet can be a helpful tool when you need to store things to take with you, but according to personal finance magazine SmartMoney it puts you at risk for overspending. Here's why and what you can do about it.

There are several reasons that attribute higher spending to fatter wallets. For starters, the more (credit) cards you have the harder it is to remember to pay them all. You're also stuck with tons of discount cards, gift cards with tiny remaining balances you want to use up, coupons, and plenty of other things that encourage you to shop. On top of that, fat wallet bulges in your pocket and you're simply more aware of it. All these things have the ability to encourage you to spend. So here's what you can do:

The best advice, financial experts agree, is to find a free moment one Saturday afternoon, empty the entire contents of your wallet onto the living room rug and do a gentle purge. Financial pros say the vast majority of consumers can get by with two or three credit cards, chosen in part according to their rewards programs (one card, for instance, that offers better mileage deals for airline tickets; another that pays more generous rebates for, say, gas, groceries or something else you purchase week to week). As for the loyalty cards, feel free to dump 'em: Most businesses have the ability to identify a customer with other information, such as their name and phone number. And if your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and you've left your AAA card at home, don't worry: The company will still let you call in and request its roadside service.

On top of that, we addressed a few other strategies in this week's episode of the Lifehacker show (that link will take you directly to the segment). You can find more ideas in our guide to replacing your wallet with your phone as well.
