  • Replace Your Cabinet Kickplate with Tiny Drawers to Increase Storage Space

In Weekend Projects, Storage, Organization, Kitchen, / 27 May 2012 / 0 comments

Replace Your Cabinet Kickplate with Tiny Drawers to Increase Storage SpaceLive in an extremely small house/apartment and looking for any way to increase your storage space? Tiny house dweller Tammy Strobel developed several innovative "hidden in plain sight" storage areas for her 128 square-foot home including small drawers under her kitchen cabinets where most people normally just install a kickplate.

The drawers don't store an incredible amount; maybe two reams of paper side-by-side. In their tiny home it serves as an electronics cord and hardware "junk" drawer. Little storage areas like this not only increase the total storage capacity but they also keep clutter down—an especially needful activity in a tiny house.

No instructions are posted on Tammy's weblog Rowdy Kittens, but just about any standard kitchen cabinet drawer instructions should work that don't require extra height for the drawer hardware. This DIY project is definitely not for everyone, but if you live in a studio apartment or a tiny house it might be up your alley.

  • DIY UberFridge Controls Homebrewing Temperatures

In Diy, Weekend Projects, Beer, Electronics, Arduino, / 19 May 2012 / 0 comments

DIY UberFridge Controls Homebrewing Temperatures If you love to homebrew but live in an area where summer temperatures get too hot for proper fermentation you can resolve yourself to wait to brew or you can build a badass Arduino Nano-controlled UberFridge which will maintain temperatures set to a tenth of a degree and can be monitored or controlled using a custom webapp. If you have a spare working fridge the build will cost around $100 in parts.

Netherlands-based Electronics hacker Elco Jacobs designed the UberFridge as summer temperatures in his city are hot enough to ruin batches of homebrew. By adding two temperature sensors (one for the beer, one for the fridge) to a Arduino Nano that controls the climate with an algorithm designed by Jacobs. Current data can be found on an LED display on the fridge or from a webapp that gets information from a USB connection going from the Arduino to a DD-WRT linux-enabled wireless router.

If you're serious about your beercraft, this should be a great weekend project. The ideal fermentation temperature for most beers is 65 degrees Fahrenheit and unless you have a basement it may be hard to find those temperatures during the summer unless you go crazy with your air conditioning. Full schematics of the build, tutorials on how to link the various systems, and the open source code for the UberFridge webapp can all be found at the source link below.

  • Make a DIY Home Theater TV Lift Cabinet

In Weekend Projects, Home Theater, Furniture, Diy, Arduino, / 25 February 2012 / 0 comments

Make a DIY Home Theater TV Lift Cabinet TV lift cabinets are great accessories for your home theater system. The only trouble is that while you can you get a smaller bedroom-sized lift cabinet for under a thousand bucks, cabinets for full size home theater TVs(up to 60") can go up to two or three grand. Here's a design you can make yourself and accommodate as big as a TV as you'd like for less than half that amount.

Instructables user ihart came up with the design based on a $540 Firgelli Lift that includes an IR detector and remote control. The author used birch plywood, wood panel molding, an IR repeater, and various hardware odds and ends to build the cabinet at a total cost of around $1,000. Not cheap, obviously, but cheaper than preconstructed cabinets for larger TVs and this design offers storage space for all your audio/video components as well as media and gaming accessories.

The author not only has plenty of construction photos and drawings, but he also recorded a 40 minute playlist containing 24 YouTube videos of the construction process.

Depending on your level of woodworking skill this project may take several weekends, but you'll be rewarded with a great piece of home theater furniture.
