  • DIY Gravity Water Filter

In Backpacking, Outdoors, Water, Water Purification, Wilderness Survival, / 21 April 2012 / 0 comments

DIY Gravity Water Filter If you're a backpacker you need a reliable yet lightweight method for purifying and filtering water in the wild. Most commercial methods are either bulky and heavy or need supplies such as salt and/or batteries. Instead you can make a gravity water filtration system using two water bladders, a $17 Aquamira Frontier Pro filter or likewise, and a pack of chlorine dioxide purification tablets.

YouTube user and veteran backpacker Jason Klass demonstrates the light weight, versatility, and low cost (around $40 for everything) of this setup. Basically you fill your "dirty" water bottle directly from a river, lake, or stream, add a purification tablet, and connect your clean water bottle to the Aquamira filter. The other side of the filter is connected to the water resevoir you drink from. Hang the dirty water from a tree branch and keep the clean water on the ground and in half an hour you'll have a couple of liters of clean water to drink.

Why does this system use both a chemical and a mechanical filter? The aquamira filter is good at keeping out dirt and objects that would change the taste of your water but does not filter closely enough to remove most bacterias and viruses. A chlorine dioxide chemical treatment (same as what most municipal water supplies use) will kill 99.999% of all viruses and bacterias and shouldn't change the taste of the water. If you run out of purification tablets while on the trail you can always gravity filter the water into a pot and boil it.

  • DIY Compass with a Needle, a Fishing Float, and a Freezer Bag

In Wilderness Survival, Navigation, Needle, Freezer Bags, Wilderness Survival, / 14 April 2012 / 0 comments

DIY Compass with a Needle, a Fishing Float, and a Freezer Bag If you're hiking or exploring the wilds and you lose or bust your compass you can make a rudimentary compass by floating a magnetized needle. Instead of looking for a pond or puddle to hold your needle you can pour water into a ziplock bag to provide a stable surface for your needle to point north.

Wilderness survival expert Dave Canterbury recommends carrying a magnetized sail needle, a fishing float, and a freezer bag for this purpose. Canterbury is opposed to unitasker items in the wilderness so each item he carries must perform multiple functions— the sail needle is large enough for repairing gear, sewing leather, or using to remove splinters; the float is also used for improvised fishing; and the freezer bag can hold water or wild edibles and also be used to mix flour and water into dough while camping without a mess. Which is why I recommend this method over the method we covered last year that requires a bowl made of duct tape.

You'll need to have already magnetized the needle for this to work. You can buy a magnetizer/demagnetizer tool at a local hardware store (or Amazon) for a couple of bucks. As Mr. Canterbury mentions in the video above, leaving a needle in the magnetizer for a few days will keep it magnetically charged for months. The tool is small enough that you can also carry it with you if you like.

As the video above demonstrates, simply fill a freezer bag ⅔ full of water, insert the needle into the fishing float so it will float, and close the bag and wait for the needle to stop moving; it will point to magnetic north (as opposed to true north).

  • How to Make a Signal Fire

In Survival, Wilderness Survival, Outdoors, Fire, Wilderness Survival, / 03 September 2011 / 0 comments

How to Make a Signal FireIf you ever have an emergency while out in the wild an effective way of getting help is to start a signal fire. You can make a fire with white or black smoke depending on your fuel source; choose whichever color provides the most contrast; Natural vegetation will produce white smoke and petroleum products produce black smoke.

Outdoor Life's survival blog points out that your signal fire should be in a visible location away from trees or other objects that might block your fire from view and that you should never let a fire get big enough that you cannot put it out with whatever you have at hand.

We've covered how to start a fire in the rain and given advice on how to build a better fire. Fire building is an essential human skill and even if you're a nonsmoker you may want to consider carrying a lighter or matches. Remember that many outdoors areas prohibit fires and in those areas you should only light a fire if you are genuinely seeking help. Photo by Ben Watts.
