  • WinPlusX Gives You Super Quick Access to Windows’ More Hidden, Advanced Programs

In Shortcuts, Utilities, Windows, Windows Downloads, Windows 8, Keyboard Shortcuts, Registry, Start Menu, Downloads, / 11 April 2012 / 0 comments

WinPlusX Gives You Super Quick Access to Windows' More Hidden, Advanced ProgramsWindows only: If you're a Windows tweak addict, you probably use tools like the Registry, Computer Management, Disk Management, and Power Options often—apps that are extremely useful, but don't always have obvious or quick shortcuts in the Start Menu. WinPlusX puts them one keyboard shortcut away.

WinplusX is actually a clone of a cool Windows 8 feature, which gives power users quicker access to the tools they love but aren't very prominent in Windows' menus—especially not the Metro menus. It's simple, portable, and gives you access to lots of advanced Windows utilities in one keystroke. You can either press Win+X to access the menu (a shortcut previously used for the Mobility Center), or right-click on the Start Menu to bring it up. You can also add or remove any shortcuts you want to the list, which makes it all the more powerful. It can be a little buggy at times, but for how simple its functionality is, it can still do the job just fine.

Of course, you can always access these things from the Start menu's search box. However, if you're a bit more mouse-oriented, this is a bit quicker and easier.

WinPlusX is a free download for Windows XP and up. If you're on Windows 7 and want something a tad different, you can also check out these registry tweaks that will put the Win+X menu in your desktop context menu.

  • Ribbon Disabler Permanently Removes the Explorer Ribbon in Windows 8

In Windows Downloads, Windows 8, Ribbon, Ui, Interface, Customization, Tweaks, Microsoft, Explorer, Windows Explorer, Windows, / 16 March 2012 / 0 comments

Ribbon Disabler Permanently Removes the Explorer Ribbon in Windows 8 Windows: The ribbon is probably one of the most highly polarizing UI decisions Microsoft has ever made (well, that and the start screen), and whether you love it or hate it, one great thing about the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is that people are already working on tools to tweak the upcoming OS so it works better for them. Ribbon Disabler, a free utility that permanently removes the ribbon from all Explorer windows, is one of those tools.

This is one of those utilities that's aimed at the person who really really hates the Explorer ribbon. It's a simple, portable app that doesn't require an installation, and when you run it you can either remove the ribbon from all Explorer windows, or restore it if you've decided you want to give it another try. Windows 8 by default allows you to show, hide, and customize the ribbon, so if you're not sure whether you like it or not, or think you could get used to it, I wouldn't suggest going all out and removing it with this tool. If you hate the ribbon, have always hated the ribbon, and blame the ribbon for the fall of modern society, it's worth a download.

How do you feel about the ribbon, either in Windows 8 or in other products, like Microsoft Office? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Add "My Computer" to the Windows 8 Start Screen

In Windows 8, Metro Ui, Ribbon, Ui, Interface, Customization, Tweaks, Microsoft, Explorer, Windows Explorer, Windows, / 03 March 2012 / 0 comments

Add "My Computer" to the Windows 8 Start ScreenThe new Metro UI in Windows 8 has a few familiar features but in general the replacement for the Start menu can be difficult get get used to for veteran Windows users. By default there is no My Computer option, but technology weblog NirmalTV shows how users can easily add that option to their Metro desktop.

Start by opening Windows Explorer-you'll see a index tree with Computer at the top. Right click on it and select Pin to Start. You'll now have a Computer entry in the start screen which you can drag to your preferred location. To add this shortcut to your desktop as well, right click on the desktop, choose personalize, and Change Desktop Icons.

  • Test Drive the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a Virtual Machine

In Windows 8, Virtualbox, Vm, Virtualization, Testing, Test Drive, Preview, Features, Windows, Windows Explorer, Windows, / 02 March 2012 / 0 comments

Test Drive the Windows 8 Consumer Preview in a Virtual Machine If you're on the fence about the new Windows 8 consumer preview and you're not sure whether all of the new features are enough to make you want to upgrade, or whether you'd like the new Metro interface, here's a safe way to give the preview a try without risking a computer or a lot of setup time to do so: use VirtualBox.

The system requirements for Windows 8 aren't particularly high, but if you just don't want to dedicate a whole computer to playing around with the preview, the folks at ExtremeTech point out that the new consumer preview—unlike the developer's preview from last year—takes to virtualization remarkably well, and VirtualBox in particular. They have a detailed walkthrough of the setup and configuration process, complete with some common issues you may run into and how to fix them. Update: So do we! Our guide was for the developer's preview, but the steps are still solid.

Some of you are already using some virtualization software to test drive Windows 8. Which are you using, and how is it going? Share your impressions and experiences in the comments below.
