  • The Best Things to Buy in March

In Best Time To Buy, Saving Money, Buying Guide, Buying, Shopping, Money, Discounts, Deals, Financial, Personal Finance, Winter, Spring, / 01 March 2012 / 0 comments

The Best Things to Buy in MarchSpring is on its way, and a lot of Spring recreation items are going on sale. Here are some of the best things to buy this month.

Every month, we look back at the best times to buy anything during the year, and pull out items each month to remind you what's coming. Obviously, none of this is to say you should go on a shopping spree—but if you've been holding off for a lower price on something, these are the things that get the sale treatment in March.

    All Winter

    • Gas Grills & Air Conditioners: It's starting to get warmer, but not so much that people are rushing to buy grills and air conditioners, so you can still find them on sale for a little bit less than usual. If you're in need of a new one, grab it now before the weather starts to heat up.
    • Wedding Supplies: Like grills, everyone's still waiting for this dreariness to pass before they have their wedding, which means it's much easier to find a venue and negotiate prices. Indoor weddings aren't that bad, we promise.

    March

    • Boats: According to About.com's Powerboating section, we're at the tail end of boat show season, which usually peaks in February. If you have room to store it for another month or two, see if you can grab them for a lower cost now.
    • Frozen Foods: National Frozen Food Month. It's a real thing. Head to your grocery store, find the coldest aisle in the building, and stock up—you should find some pretty good sales there. And the best part of all: they're already frozen, so they're designed to be stored for long periods of time. Just make sure you have space in your freezer.
    • Gardening Tools: The flowers haven't started to bloom yet, but if you think ahead, you can grab those new gloves, shovels, or other tools now for less. While you're preparing, throw an old rug on your garden to kill all the weeds before it comes time to plant.
    • Golf Clubs: Once again, the bitter sting of winter strikes at the heart of summer activity-based retailers—but that means you get some sweet savings. New models are starting to come out for the summer, which means your local pro shop is probably trying to get rid of last year's models (which means you pay less for them).
    • Luggage: Why no one vacations in the depressing month of March I'll never know, but it falls between vacation seasons, so you can usually get a good deal on that new suitcase you need. If you anticipate needing it on your next vacation, grab it now.

We'll be posting updates for you guys every month, so you're aware of the deals going on all year round. If you're curious to see what's coming up, you can always check out our full best time to buy guide to see the entire year at a glance. And, if you know of any deals we didn't mention, share them in the comments below.
  • Make Your Own Instant Hand Warmers in 5 Minutes

In Diy, Winter, Diy Hacks, Saving Money, Survival, Money, Discounts, Deals, Financial, Personal Finance, Winter, Spring, / 24 February 2012 / 0 comments

Make Your Own Instant Hand Warmers in 5 MinutesYou know those expensive instant hand warmer packs used to thaw frozen hands out in the winter? No need to buy them. Make your own instant hot packs with ziplock bags and just one thing from the hardware store.

Instructables user junits15 posts the easy instructions. You need a large ziploc bag, a smaller one, some water, and calcium chloride ice-melt pellets from the hardware store.

Fill the large bag a quarter of the way with the ice-melt pellets. Fill the smaller ziploc bag halfway with water and seal and then put it inside the bigger bag, squeeze out the excess air and seal. Now, squeeze the smaller bag until it breaks open and the water mixes with the ice-melt pellets, which should create a warming reaction between 20 minutes and an hour according to PopSci (how long will depend on how many pellets you use).

  • The Best Things to Buy in February

In Best Time To Buy, Saving Money, Buying Guide, Buying, Shopping, Money, Discounts, Deals, Financial, Personal Finance, Winter, Spring, / 01 February 2012 / 0 comments

The Best Things to Buy in FebruaryJanuary is the biggest discount month of the year, but a lot of the winter sales carry over into February—not to mention a few new sales thanks to lots of annual trade shows. Here are the best things to buy this month.

Every month, we look back at the best times to buy anything during the year, and pull out items each month to remind you what's coming. Obviously, none of this is to say you should go on a shopping spree—but if you've been holding off for a lower price on something, these are the things that get the sale treatment in February.

    All Winter

    • Gas Grills & Air Conditioners: If you live in a colder area, February is a trying month. Luckily, summer-centric products like grills and air conditioners are quite a bit cheaper, since no one else is really looking to get one. If you're in the market, now's a good time to grab.
    • Wedding Supplies: Like grills, everyone is waiting for the Spring to plan their wedding—which means it's much easier to find a venue and negotiate prices this month, before the nice weather hits. Maybe an indoor wedding is right for you instead.

    February

    • Boats: It may be winter, but February is boat show season, which means there are all sorts of deals to be had, according to About.com's Powerboating section. If you have some place to stash it until the ice melts, head on over to your local boat show, meet some manufacturers, and see what you can find.
    • Broadway Tickets: It's the off season, so prices are down for Broadway and off-Broadway shows this time of year. In fact, this year, you can grab some great 2-for-1 deals from now until February 12, for popular shows like Avenue Q, Rent, the Blue Man Group, and more. Head over to NYCGo.com to see more details.
    • Digital Cameras: As PC World notes (and as any internet junkie surely knows), it's the time of year where manufacturers announce all their new products at trade shows like CES. That means everyone's gearing up for the new stuff, and you can get great deals on last year's models. President's Day is usually where discounts hit their peaks, so if you can wait until then, we recommend it.
    • HDTVs & Home Theaters: Even if you aren't a sports fan, the Super Bowl sales are definitely worth checking out—that is, if you didn't get a new TV during the Black Friday rush. New models are coming out next month, which means unless you're gunning for new technolgies—like 3D, says CNET—there's no shame in getting last year's model while prices are low.
    • Video Games: Tons of video games come out in early Winter in time for the holidays, so the majority of video game nuts have already gotten their copies. You might be able to find some good deals, though you'll have the most success by monitoring stores like Steam, which regularly have sales on a number of games. Watch it throughout the month, and you might be able to make the wait for Skyrim worth it.

We'll be posting updates for you guys every month, so you're aware of the deals going on all year round. If you're curious to see what's coming up, you can always check out our full best time to buy guide to see the entire year at a glance. • Prevent Car Doors From Freezing Shut with Cooking Spray

In Clever Uses, Winter, Cars, Automobiles, Household, Money, Discounts, Deals, Financial, Personal Finance, Winter, Spring, / 26 January 2012 / 0 comments

Prevent Car Doors From Freezing Shut with Cooking SprayTrying to get into your car the morning after a snowstorm only to find the doors are frozen shut is a devastating feeling. You might avoid that frustration with some Pam or other cooking spray.

The blog Coffee Break with Liz and Kate recommends spraying cooking spray on the rubber seals around the car doors and then rubbing it with a paper towel. According to the AAA, the doors freeze because of snow melting into the seals and freezing overnight; the cooking spray oils should protect against that melting water.

Liz and Kate also suggest in their post the DIY window de-icer solution made of vinegar and water we've mentioned previously and the cool hand sanitizer frozen car door lock trick.

While you're out there winterizing with Pam, might as well coat your shovel with it too.
