  • Unhook and Reuse Plastic Zip Ties with a Simple Trick

In Macgyver Tips, Zip Ties, Cable Ties, Household, Clips, / 18 April 2012 / 0 comments

Unhook and Reuse Plastic Zip Ties with a Simple Trick Zip ties are great for organizing cables and the like, but most people don't know that you can reuse them over and over again. You can, and here's how.

We've shown you one method for creating your own reusable zip ties, but if you need to undo a traditionally locked zip tie, reader Jack Weekes shows us that it's actually really easy. Just stick your fingernail in the locking mechanism (or a pin, if your fingernail won't fit), press down, and slide it out. I and many others were always under the impression that these things were made to be one-use only—turns out there's no need to spend the extra cash on rubbers ones after all. Check out the video to see this trick in action.

  • Repurpose Zip Ties into Bicycle Snow "Chains"

In Cycling, Winter, Repurpose, Zip Ties, Cable Ties, / 26 December 2011 / 0 comments

Repurpose Zip Ties into Bicycle Snow "Chains"When you're trying to get around on a bicycle in the winter studded tires are a great investment, but if you only occasionally have snow or ride a bike in snowy weather you can make a set of tire "chains" using a few dozen cable ties.

Bike shop website Dutch Bike Co. shares this tip for quick and cheap traction in snow. The zip ties themselves dig into the snow nicely but are not thick enough to make the bike bounce. The author alternates cutting off the zip tie heads on either side of the tire to help with cornering.

There are two caveats with using this method—make sure that if your bike has fenders that the zip tie heads are low enough to not cause clearance issues and also make sure that you don't try this if your bike has rim brakes; the zip ties will get in the way of the brake pads.

  • Q Knot Reusable Cable Ties Keep Everything Tidy Without the Need for Scissors

In Stuff We Like, Cables, Organization, Cable Management, Zip Ties, Cable Ties, Clips, / 22 December 2011 / 0 comments

Q Knot Reusable Cable Ties Keep Everything Tidy Without the Need for Scissors Zip ties are a pain, even the reusable velcro ones. These rubber cable ties will keep your cables neat without the need to wrestle them free later on.

Zip ties are great for keeping your cables organized and put away, but you need to cut them up if you ever want to get your cables out. Not only is this annoying, but depending on how often you need to get at your cables, it can end up costing you more in the long run. Even the reusable velcro-based ties are awful, requiring the jaws of life to pull apart. The Q Knot rubber cable ties are a much better solution for creating that perfect cordless workspace, since you can pull them apart easily and reuse them whenever you want. They're about $9 for a pack of 25 in three different sizes. Hit the link to check them out.

  • How to Reuse Zip Ties

In Clever Uses, Zip Ties, Cable Ties, Cable Management, Zip Ties, Cable Ties, Clips, / 27 August 2011 / 0 comments

How to Reuse Zip TiesYou can now buy reusable zip ties, but they cost three times as much as regular ones. Instead, use a simple trick from The How-To Geek to turn any zip tie into a reusable one by inserting the tie band backwards into the ratcheting head.

Zip ties are designed to be used by inserting the band so that the gear rack is facing up into the ratcheting head. This ensures that you can only tighten the band and not pull it back out. Inserting the band gear rack side down will still create a usable lock that you can later remove by wiggling the band back out.

This method depends on how the teeth of the gears on the gear rack are formed and it might not work with every type of zip tie. Photo by donkeyboxx.
